Have you ever scrolled through social media and saw some sort of food or recipe and then found yourself hours later at the supermarket, buying all of the ingredients to make that item? Have you ever seen a pair of shoes in a picture and immediately purchased them because you realized that you HAD to have them? Have you seen a picture of your friends at a movie theater, only to find yourself planning a movie theater trip for your family that same day? They call that social media influence and it’s basically what brand repping is all about.
I’ve definitely noticed how much influence social media has on me. In June, I came across a video of a bath bomb on Facebook and found myself just minutes later, asking for small shop bath bomb companies in our Brand Rep group on Facebook. Not even an hour later, I had purchased a few for my girls from Carol and Grace, a shop that came highly recommended by our repping friends. Since then, we have become a part of the team and have purchased many more. If not for that one video, none of that would have happened and my girls wouldn’t have fallen in love with bath bombs.
A few weeks ago, I saw another video on Facebook for Terra’s Kitchen, a healthy food delivery service. There was a link to save $40 off of my first order and like a switch in my brain had just been flipped, I was on the site placing our first order (which was amazing by the way). When I received the box, I took did a Facebook live video while I opened it, which has since been viewed by almost 600 people. I wasn’t asked to create that video, I just did it…. which is what social media influence is all about. Free marketing for companies. And while some give you an incentive to share (Terra’s Kitchen will give you a $25 credit for each person you refer and some small shops offer you free merchandise when a certain number of people use your discount code), sometimes you just share to share. Isn’t that what social media is all about?
With thousands of small shops, it would be nearly impossible to find them all without the brand rep community. When I’m scrolling through Instagram, I’m not only looking at photography inspiration (which is also huge for me), but I’m looking at each outfit, each accessory, each pair of shoes. If something catches my eye, I tap the pic and check out the shop. It’s the way I’ve found most of our favorite shops. I’m not sure that we realize how much influence we have, just by posting a picture or two on social media. It’s such a powerful tool. We have the ability to reach so many people with our positive (and sometimes negative) experiences. Just by sharing, you are helping out a business to grow and you could be the difference between them making it or deciding to close up shop.
Whether you are a brand rep for a particular company, you are provided an invite link, or you just love a company, make sure to help them out by sharing on social media. You’d be surprised how much of a difference you can make, especially in the lives of a small shop owner!
