What would you say if I told you that I was able to get outfits for my husband and three kids for under $20 total?  One store.  One twenty dollar bill.  It was a challenge that we decided to take on and we totally crushed it.

The Store.

I’ve always been a deal lover, but lately we’ve been on a pretty tight budget so getting new clothes just hasn’t been an option.  I decided to take the family to our local Goodwill to check out the racks and see what we could find.  I presented them all with a challenge… to find an outfit that they love for around $5.  They gladly accepted.

Even my 5 year old, Falynn, got into it. She loved looking at everything, especially the newborn clothes.  She couldn’t help but show me all of the tiny sweaters and pants.  It’s hard to believe she was just wearing things that small and now she’s about to graduate from pre-school.

It was probably the best shopping trip ever. Not only did the girls have a blast searching the racks to choose their own outfits, but with prices starting at $1.49, I had a hard time leaving anything behind.  On the way home, they were actually talking about doing this again next month and couldn’t wait to wear their outfits to church the following day.

So let me brag a bit about what they chose and how much they cost.

Falynn’s Top and Jeans – Total $2.98

This adorable Carter’s top was brand new, with the tags still on and was only $1.49!  It can be worn as a dress or a top and is bright and fabulous, just like Falynn’s personality.  She also chose a pair of Cherokee jeans that were also $1.49.  These were a favorite of mine because they have an adjustable waist and will fit her for at least a year.

Iyla’s Romper – Total $1.49

I absolutely fell in love with this Xhilaration romper as soon as Iyla showed it to me.  Not only does it have beautiful detailing on the front, but the back has these great buttons that really wow you.  Iyla’s always been a comfort girl, when it comes to her clothes.  So while this romper is comfortable, it’s also really pretty and feminine.  It has a drawstring belt with tassels that add both flair and style.  While it wasn’t brand new, it really was in excellent condition! At only $1.49, it was an absolute steal.

Lucia’s Top and Jeans – Total $7.48

Lucia was able to find a lot more than she thought she would. Now that she’s wearing adult sizes, she was afraid that she was going to be looking at “old lady” shirts.  Instead, she found at least 10 things that she loved and actually had a hard time choosing which two pieces she was going to get. She wound up choosing this adorable Total Girl tank that features a pineapple design and was only $1.49. While she tried on a bunch of different jeans, she couldn’t stop talking about how comfortable these Mossimo jeans were.  They looked great, are part of her school uniform (yay) and were only $5.99.

Nelson’s Top and Pants – Total $7.98

While the girls were having a blast, Daddy got to search for an outfit for himself.  This Greg Norman polo was only $4.99.  The Kirkland Signature khakis were 50% off, ringing up at only $2.99 and also were in excellent condition.  For an outfit that would have easily cost $50 brand new, he really got an incredible deal and looks great, doesn’t he?

We really loved this shopping on a budget challenge. The girls learned a little bit about shopping on a budget and walked away with some super cute clothes. Falynn even got a little something extra that we found by the register… her own Russian nesting dolls, for only $2.99.

Have you ever shopped in a thrift store? What was your experience?  Do you think we should do this again to see if we can score such good deals?

We walked in with $20 and walked out with outfits for my husband and our three daughters. It's shopping on a budget at it's finest. living on a budget, family budget, thrift store challenge, goodwill, budget blog, parenting, parenting tips, parenting blog, love, life, mom blog, mom blogger, mom bloggers, mom blogs

  • Way to go mama!! That is such a great deal! Sadly, I am not a deal shopper. I hate the searching and the disappointment when I find a treasure I love but it isn’t in my size!

  • You found some great deals! I’ll have to check out Goodwill sometime. I donate all the time, but I don’t actually ever go in. That’s awesome you found like new stuff and even stuff with the tags still on!

  • Everyone looks great. It really is a fun challenge and it’s amazing what you can find if you just take the time to look. Let’s shop together next week 🙂
