With this easy and beautiful DIY shoe organizer advent calendar, your little ones can count down to Christmas. All you need is a hanging shoe organizer, a Cricut, and a few supplies. Once done, it becomes a reusable advent calendar that you can use every year to hide a gift for every day leading up to Christmas.
Every year I forget to buy my daughters an advent calendar for Christmas until the very last minute. That usually means that I’m settling for what’s left at the store, I’m spending way more than anyone should be spending on a box with things that will eventually wind up in the trash, or I’m getting one of the cheap boxes with chocolate behind each tiny perforated door. This year, I took matters into my own hands and created a DIY shoe organizer advent calendar.
There are so many reasons to make your advent calendar this year.
It’s reusable. At the end of every year, fold it up and put it with your other Christmas decor. All you’ll need to do next year is fill it with goodies for your kids.
It allows you to fill it with things your child needs and wants vs. settling for whatever comes in the premade advent calendars.
It makes beautiful Christmas decor. Hang it on your child’s bedroom door to make it more festive.
Supplies You’ll Need for the DIY shoe organizer advent calendar
- a hanging door shoe organizer
- Cricut (I have a maker 3)
- smart iron-on in two colors (I used white and red glitter)
- heat press (mini or standard)
- weeding tool
- scissors
I linked all of the items I used. If you don’t have a heat press, you can also use an iron, though I do find the heat press is much easier as it allows you to set the temperature and the timer. Cricut also has a heat guide online to look up the material you are ironing onto to give you the perfect time and temperature. It makes things so much easier!
How to create this DIY shoe organizer advent calendar:
Step 1: Remove the shoe organizer from the package. You may need to iron it, depending on how it was packaged. You want each shoe compartment to be as flat as possible.
Step 2: Using Cricut Design Space, search for my project, “DIY shoe organizer advent calendar.” I’ve prepared the numbers for you, so all you have to do is load the iron on vinyl and
Step 3: Using the weeding tool, weed the white numbers.
Step 4: Repeat step 3 with the red.
Step 5: Using scissors, cut out the numbers for the background and foreground colors.
Step 6: Place the white number 1 on the first compartment, and using your heat-press, secure the number 1 to the shoe organizer. Repeat with the other numbers.
Step 7: Once the backing is cool to the touch, you can peel it off. The white iron-on should be secured to the shoe organizer. Don’t worry if it’s not completely smooth. Since you will be layering the iron-on, the second pass will help.
Step 8: Place the red glitter iron-on numbers on top of the white. Make sure to center it. Using your heat-press, secure them. Repeat with the other numbers.
Step 9: Once the backing is cool to the touch, you can peel it off.
Step 10: Hang the shoe organizer on the door and fill each compartment with one gift. I chose to use tissue paper to wrap them. It makes the DIY shoe organizer advent calendar more festive and keeps little eyes from prying at their gifts ahead of time.
**If you have more than one child or you’re just feeling extra, add a name to your DIY shoe organizer advent calendar.
