We recently took our three-year-old rescue dog, Elle, on her first road trip. Luckily, we had done a lot of research before leaving so we had everything we needed for her packed and ready to go. I thought it would be helpful for those of you who are planning to travel with your dogs, to share our list! So, here is everything you need for dog travel.

How much does it cost to travel with a dog?

Airlines generally charge a fixed fee for dogs and other pets that fly in-cabin, ranging from $50 to $250 per one-way trip. In Cargo: Larger animals must fly in cargo, where pets are placed in a pressurized, temperature-controlled compartment under the plane. If you will be staying at a pet-friendly hotel, most will charge you a fee for that as well.

Any tips for dog travel in the car?

Get your dog used to the car for a month or so before you leave, by taking small trips to the store. Avoid carsickness by letting your dog travel on an empty stomach. Keep the air conditioning on. If you have space, lay down a pet bed so that they are comfortable. Consider a seat belt or car seat to keep them safe.

Are long car rides bad for dogs?

Taking your pets along on a road trip is a great way to avoid the trauma and expense of boarding your dogs or cats. But traveling long distances in a car isn’t so easy for all animals. Experts suggest taking your pets on shorter trips first to get them accustomed to traveling in a car.

  • That is so cool! I had no idea they made dog strollers. This is the perfect checklist for anyone traveling with their dog.

  • We have been training our biggest pup to be ride friendly so that we can travel with him more. It is literally like packing for a small child when we bring all the necessities and wants for him!
