It’s the SUMMER! For us Floridians, that means, it’s consecutive days of RAIN! You weren’t expecting that, were ya? It feels like we have more sunny days in the Winter than in the Summer. So while all of you out-of-staters think that we are laying out every day, working on our awesome tans, we are actually indoors, waiting for the rain to stop. Welcome to the Sunshine State! Of course, just because it’s raining outside, doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. Here are our top 5 family-friendly rainy day activities!
#1: Indoor Movies
My girls are huge movie lovers. They might own every Disney movie ever made (don’t judge). They have to collect something, right?! We’ve noticed that our 9 year old’s eyes have been getting worse lately.
We realized that she keeps the phone screen super close to her face which is probably contributing to her sight problems. We’ve tried putting the videos on the TV, but with 4 other people in the house, it’s not easy to get them to agree on one thing to watch.
When I was contacted by CINEMOOD, I had never heard of their portable movie theater, but I immediately knew that my family would love it. It connects to your tablet or phone and you can stream Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, and many others onto any flat surface! This means, they can stream it on the wall, the ceiling, the car, the house (if they’re outdoors)…. and the further back they move the cube, the bigger the screen gets (up to 12 feet)!
They’ve even included your favorites from Frozen, Toy Story, Lion King, and many more on your CINEMOOD. You can even download your own content!
It’s only 3 inches so it’s completely portable which means when the sun comes out and we go somewhere, our CINEMOOD can come with us! My husband immediately “called dibs” on it when it showed up but the girls have taken over. I find them laying on the floor, watching a movie on the ceiling, almost every day. It’s pretty awesome. #2: Dance Parties
We don’t really need a reason to dance in our house, but when the rain comes down, you can find at least one, if not all of the girls dancing. Whether they are choreographing their own dances, practicing the routines that they learned at dance camp or just being goofy, they love to incorporate dance into their every day.
I particularly love watching my youngest who has grown up watching her older sisters dance competitively. It’s in her blood and she loves learning everything she can from her big sisters. She’s quite the dancer. Check out her pool dance.
#3: Art and Sewing
If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s art. My husband and I both love to draw and paint and the girls have fallen in love with art as well. We might actually need an entire closet to contain all of the markers, paint, crayons, and colored pencils in our home.
We also have a wall of paintings that features the paintings we’ve each done. Everyone comments on it as soon as they walk into our house. While we would all love to just draw every day, rainy days give us a little extra excuse. There is nothing I enjoy more than watching my girls express themselves through art.
Something my two oldest have also found a love for is sewing. Sewing is something that always takes me back to my childhood. I remember my Nana’s sewing machine, the table it sat on, and that silly tomato-looking cushion that was filled with threaded needles. While I never learned to sew myself, it’s something that I would love for my girls to learn and love. The other day, they grabbed some scrap fabric and just started sewing these cute whales.
My oldest has even taught herself how to use our sewing machine (which is something I’ve never been able to do myself). I love that they are able to use their love of creativity to learn and develop a hobby that they both love and can bond over. I can’t wait to see where this new love takes them.
#4: Reading
The best part about reading for us is that we can do it whether the sun is shining or it’s raining cats and dogs. The girls have a vast collection of books, so much so that we’ve already filled two huge bookshelves in their room. Books are such an important part of growing, imagination and fantasy.
I love that my girls love reading because, through books, they know that they can be anything they want to be. While we started our girls early on, reading a book to them at bedtime, their love of reading has now spread out throughout the day and you will often find them with at least one book in their hand.

Puzzles are a great way to unwind. It’s a family activity that we can spend hours on. Over the years, we’ve put a number of puzzles together and each time we go to the store, we gravitate toward the puzzles, trying to decide which one will be our next. I love that it’s a way to use our brains and usually puzzle time is quiet time.
We can always use a little quiet in our lives, right?! Shoot… I can use a whole lot of quiet time. Maybe we should make the puzzle a daily activity!

I can’t wait for my baby girl to grow a bit more to do activities together.
What a great idea for a post! Honestly I know how it feels when it’s raining out side and all you want to do is sleep but you have energetic kids that want to have fun. This list is awesome for those rainy days with kids! Thanks.
I am so glad you shared these ideas! I always need new things to do and that portable movie player is amazing!
You are right about rain really dampening summer fun! These are some nice ideas for keeping kids happy when they can’t go outside to play. Thanks for the heads up about CINEMOOD hadn’t heard of that before.
Dance parties definitely sound like they are so much fun. We have them often here!
These are some great ideas to pass away the rainy days. I know that they can be troublesome for stir crazy children.
If it’s rainy, my family and I usually cooks soup. Afterwards we play either monopoly or Uno to kill time. If I’m alone, I research about places to blog.
