Gifts don’t always have to cost a fortune. In fact, some of my favorite gifts were handmade by my daughter’s hands and were created using supplies we already had in our house! Since our popsicle stick coaster was such a hit, we wanted to come up with another inexpensive craft idea for you. We headed to our local dollar store, picked up just 4 items, and created this adorable pencil holder jar, especially for Dad, that he’s sure to love!
The best part about this handmade Father’s Day gift (besides the low cost), is that it can be used for a number of things. If Dad already has a pencil holder on his desk, you can fill the jar with his favorite candies or have him use it for loose nails/screws or even spare change. The possibilities are really endless. What Dad will love most is that his little one(s) created it, especially for him!
While this fun craft idea can be created by your little ones, I do recommend adult supervision for the hot glue gun. You may also be able to use craft glue, though we haven’t tested that out.
Supplies You’ll Need
- a glass jar
- chalkboard tag
- chalk writer
- hot glue gun
We picked up the glass jar, the twine, the chalkboard tags, and the chalk writer at Dollar Tree. Each was only $1.25. If you decide to fill the jar with Dad’s favorite candy as part of his Father’s Day gift, you can pick some up at Dollar Tree as well! We already had the hot glue gun and scissors in our house, so this handmade Father’s Day pencil holder jar cost us only $5.
How to create this pencil holder jar
Step 1: Remove the lid from the glass jar. Place a small, thin line of hot glue at the very top of the jar and press the end of the twine to it. Wrap the twine around the entire jar, leaving as little space as possible. You may want to add thin lines of hot glue every 10 wraps or so so that the twine doesn’t move. You’ll also need to glue the end of the twine to the bottom of the jar so it doesn’t come undone. Cut off any stray pieces with scissors.
Step 2: Replace the lid. If you’ll be using it for a pencil holder, leave the center piece of the lid off. If you’ll be using it for storage, leave it in.
Step 3: Write a sweet message on the chalkboard tags. We chose I love Dad.
Step 4: Place hot glue on the back center of the tag and stick it to the twine.
Once you have finished your pencil holder jar, if you post a photo on social media, we’d love for you to tag @thesupermomlife and encourage others to join in the fun!
