At the end of March, I hit rock bottom. I had several health issues and weighed more than I did the day I gave birth to my oldest daughter (around 70lbs overweight). After trying on some new clothes, I cried my eyes out, realizing how overweight and unhealthy I had become. It was around the same time that I began hearing about the idea of using food as medicine.

I couldn’t sleep, had regular headaches, suffered from debilitating anxiety, and was incredibly depressed. I was convinced I was pre-diabetic and was concerned that I was on the path of much more serious health issues.

I know this is the age of body positivity, but I knew my weight was unhealthy, and having a family with a history of diabetes and heart disease, I couldn’t continue to ignore it. Looking at myself in the mirror honestly broke me. I was ready to give up.

One night, I woke up at 2 or 3 am and couldn’t get back to sleep no matter what I tried. While I don’t typically look at my phone or laptop that late, I picked up my phone and went straight to my emails.

One of the new messages stood out.

Imagine a health and wellness program designed specifically for you? Yes, it exists! We are offering you a personalized experience from a leading health solution. The best part? It’s available to you at no additional cost.

I visited the program website, and the first thing I saw was “Let go of crippling anxiety, stubborn fat, and chronic conditions.”

The more I read about the program, the more intrigued I became. It was 100% covered through my health insurance company and it was almost as though they knew exactly what I was going through and delivered the solution straight to my inbox.

I’ve been sharing my journey on Instagram and just recently announced that I had lost 20 pounds by using food as medicine. It wasn’t long before I had an inbox full of questions, asking me what I was doing.

I had started this blog post about a month ago and then stopped because honestly, I didn’t think anyone would care. But now that I see the changes that it’s made in mine and my husband’s health and weight, I knew it was time to share.

Using Food as Medicine

The name of the program is Betr Health. Betr Health is not a “diet.” It’s reprogramming your body’s metabolism and using food as medicine. You are cutting out the sugar, the processed foods, and the unnecessary foods that have turned your body into what it is today – in my case, an unhealthy disaster.

Betr Health is not an MLM. It’s not a fad diet. It’s a way to learn to eat again and something we can easily implement for the rest of our lives. I could lose weight, get healthy and possibly lose the anxiety that has tied me down for way too long.

Betr Health’s Three Levels

The program is set up in three levels.

Level 1 is to remove unhealthy bacteria. Basically, you are healing your gut from years of feeding it all the wrong foods. They provide a list of foods you can eat, and they also have a variety of level 1 friendly recipes. If you don’t like to cook, they do have a food delivery service (which is delicious, by the way). The food is not covered under your insurance plan, but we have found it’s worth the money and saves so much time!

Level 2 is the reintroduction level. By this level, your gut health is fully restored. You slowly reintroduce level 2 approved foods. Food sensitivities are usually detected within 30 mins after consuming the food and then you’ll know what you can or can’t eat.

Level 3 is the maintenance level. It’s all about practicing the 80/20 rule. For 80% of your week, you should aim for clean and healthy eating.

Our Results So Far

We are currently on week 11 of the Betr Health program. Just by using food as medicine, I have lost 20 pounds and my husband has lost 30. We don’t exercise regularly, though we do try to go on family walks, after dinner, as often as we can. Sometimes that’s multiple times a week and other times it’s twice a month.

We have decided not to move onto level 3 until we’ve lost all of the excess weight. I still have about 40 pounds to go to get to my ideal weight. I have added in all of the fruits and veggies that weren’t allowed in level 1 and have only gone off of plan once for my daughter’s birthday.

I did have a week or so where I was struggling with missing desserts. I used to be a huge fan of ice cream, eating a large bowl full every single night. A couple of weeks ago, I researched the different sugar-free ice creams and found sugar-free vanilla that doesn’t have a ton of carbs and calories. I eat only the serving size and am completely satisfied, without compromising all of the hard work I’ve put in.

I have honestly seen a huge difference in my health already. I’m going for my annual physical in the next month or so and should see for sure if my numbers have improved. The biggest surprise is the absence of my anxiety.

I will write more about that soon. I’m honestly still shocked that food makes such a big difference in your overall health and wanted to give a little update on our progress first.

If you’d like more information or want to see if your insurance company covers the Betr Health program, you can visit their website for more info. They did give me a link (as they do all of their members), so if insurance doesn’t cover you, you can get $20 off your jumpstart membership.

  • A good clean diet is something we all should strive for! I love this post as someone who has anxiety too

  • A Jewish co-worker years ago first told me, “Let Food Be Your Medicine and Medicine Be Your Food” and I modified my diet right away.

What does that have to do with being Jewish? Also, I wouldn’t advise taking medicine like food. That sounds dangerous.
