It’s been only four days since the schools closed and we are scrambling to suddenly figure out how to homeschool our kids. I’ve always been curious and have considered virtual education for my kids over the years, but being forced into it didn’t give me enough time to really do the research I needed to do. I’m not ready. I’m not even sure I’ll be ready in a month. I need direction. I need educational resources for my kids.
I’d love to just sit my kids at the kitchen table and tell them to do whatever it is they do in school. But we all know that a 7, 10 and 14 year old are probably going to grab their phones and start watching videos on youtube or tiktok or whatever it is they spend most of their unsupervised time doing these days.
I’ve been getting a number of emails from teachers, from the school, from local organizations and educational sites that we signed up for over the years. It was all so overwhelming for me. I reached out to a couple of my friends who are teachers and they are all just taking it easy right now and gathering what they need to start teaching in a couple of weeks (since we would have been on Spring Break anyway).
If you didn’t appreciate teachers up until this point, you are going to start to. It’s impossible to realize how much they do in a day and with way more than just your one child that won’t sit still long enough to learn anything. GIVE THOSE TEACHERS A RAISE! A BIG ONE! And thank them more. I know I will.
Over the last couple of days, I’ve spent some time online trying to find the best educational resources for my kids and wanted to share in case you are in a similar position. If you know of any free educational sites I haven’t listed (especially for high schoolers), please share in the comments below so that I can add it! At this point, that village we are always looking for is right here, on the internet. Virtual high fives.

There are so many more! For Elementary, try: Learninglynx.com, abcya.com, Mathabc.com, storylineonline.com, turtlediary.com, easypeazyhomeschool.com, (might not be correct web address), BrainPop.com (some free content), and so on, just do a search for what you’re looking for, , such as “free common core”, “free homeschool curriculum”, “free online math games”, etc.
Thank you so much for this long list of free educational resources.
great tips with this post, the timing is perfect. so many kids are out of school right now
nice list. i’m sure parents are very grateful! i just heard that Pacific Marine Mammal Center is to Offer Free Virtual Field Trips to the Community. So cool what these companies are coming up with.
These are great resources. I used to homeschool my kiddos year ago, so this is not a huge transition for us. Having said that, I remember the first week and how overwhelmed we felt. Therefore I completely understand what people are going through. This is a great time for everyone to bond. This too shall pass.
These are all so great. I have looked into these since we have been home for 9 days.
