Our oldest daughter, Lucia, just turned 13. Cue the ugly crying face. I swear I just gave birth to her yesterday but somehow she is this suddenly this beautiful young lady, an inch taller than I am with feet that are two sizes bigger than mine. The days of stuffed animals and cute little tutu dresses are over. While it used to be so easy to buy her birthday gifts, this year I was racking my tired Mom brain trying to figure out what to buy her. And then I got an email from Happy Cards.
We were walking through Target one day last month and I saw these cards in the gift card section. Instead of the gift cards that are good for just one store, Happy Cards can be used in a variety of stores, depending on the one you purchase. Choose from: Happy Dining, Happy Kid, Happy Teen, Happy Lady, Happy Guy, Happy Bites, Happy Eats, Happy Local Eats, Happy Beauty, Happy Bride, Happy Student or Happy Her. Happy Cards combine many great brands into one perfect gift for any one and any occasion and can be purchased in a grocery store near you. When I saw Happy Teen, that missing lightbulb suddenly lit up just above my head. It was THE perfect gift for Lucia!
Happy Cards – Happy Teen
Happy Teen features many of my daughter’s favorite places. And when Happy Cards presented her with her very own Happy Teen Card, she couldn’t wait to get to spending! We turned this incredibly generous gift into a day of shopping for me and my oldest baby… Yes, she’ll always be my baby whether she’s taller than me or not.
This wonderful opportunity gave us the chance to spend time together while giving her the ability to choose her own gifts which, as you may imagine, is very important at this age. Of course, she started off at Barnes & Noble. Lucia has never met a book she doesn’t love. She chose 3 that she’s had her eye on and was excited to pay with her own card instead of having to ask me for the money.
Next, it was over to the mall. She was disappointed to find out that Sephora wouldn’t accept the Happy Card because it was inside of JCPenney and not a stand alone store. The JCPenney Sephora’s operate differently than stand-alone stores, in general, from couponing, to birthday rewards, to gift card redemption. Luckily American Eagle was just around the corner and she was able to find so many cute, age-appropriate items on the clearance rack (that’s my girl!).
I found that since it was “her money”, she was so much more responsible with what she purchased, checking her balance before deciding what she would and wouldn’t take home. It was definitely a proud Mama moment for me and since then, I’ve noticed that when we go somewhere, she is more aware of prices (even if I’m paying). Who knew that this little shopping spree would wind up being educational?!
Lucia did so well that she actually still has money left on the card and wanted to save it for next weekend so we can head over to the Nike Outlet. She wound up with a pair of shorts, 2 shirts, a romper, a dress and 3 books. Not a bad gift right? I can’t remember the last time I got such a great gift for my birthday!
