In honor of Pigeon’s 16th BIRD-day, we decided to create a fun BIRD-day craft! I have to say that of all of the projects we’ve ever done, Falynn absolutely loved this one the most. She’s been a huge Mo Willems fan since she was old enough to go to the library. The Pigeon series is at the top of her list. She will read them to anyone that will listen and she just giggles through the entire book.
When I told her that we were going to make a pigeon mask, she went cuckoo. With just a few simple steps, she was transformed into one of her favorite characters of all time!
Supplies You’ll Need:
Paper Plates (pastel blue or you can paint a white plate)
Construction Paper (white and black)
Yellow Masking Tape or Yellow Construction Paper
Popsicle Stick (light blue or you can paint one)
Light Blue Paint (only if you need to paint the plate or popsicle stick)
Glue Stick
Hot Glue Gun + Glue
Scissors
Let’s Make a Pigeon Mask
- If you need to paint the popsicle stick blue, make sure to do that first so it has time to dry.
- Using a round object, trace a circle onto the white paper (we used the masking tape)
- Using a smaller round object, trace a circle onto the black paper (we used a lid from a spice container)
- Glue the black circle on top of the white circle (toward the side, middle). This makes Pigeon’s eye.
- Glue the eye onto the middle of your plate.
- Cut out 2 strips of yellow masking tape (twice as big as you want it) and fold it in half so that it’s not sticky on either side. If you don’t have yellow masking tape, just cut out two strips of yellow construction paper.
- Glue them to the side of the plate and then use your scissors to shape them into Pigeon’s beak.
- Cut out a small white rectangle and glue it to your popsicle stick. Make sure to measure to make sure that once it’s glued on, you can still see it.
- Take your popsicle stick and hot glue it to the back of the plate. This is Pigeon’s neck and what they will hold their mask with.
- Take a black marker and trace around the white circle, the beak and the white rectangle on Pigeon’s neck.
To say that Falynn loves her Pigeon mask would be an understatement. I’ve found her walking around with it more than a few times since we made it last week. It’s a really easy and inexpensive craft idea that your kids will love, especially if they love Mo Willems books as much as Falynn does! These books are a favorite of ours because of their lighthearted, funny tone. You can’t help but giggle as you read through each book and wondering what Pigeon will want next. Pigeon is so relatable to kids and even to us parents who can relate to every one of Pigeon’s temper tantrums.
By the way, it’s time to get excited for Mo Willems newest Pigeon book, The Pigeon Has to Go to School, which will be in stores on June 2, 2019! Stay tuned for more on that book! Falynn’s already counting down the days.

Oh how clever and creative this is! My kids are older so I never heard of this book, but looks amazing.
Now this sounds like a fun mask to make for little ones who love this book. It seems simple to do and fun to play with.
This is adorable! I can see why kids would love this. The book sounds fabulous, I will have to check it out for sure. My kids are older, but still. I always like to discover books.
This mask looks like such a fun idea. It would be so much fun to make when my nieces and nephews come over.
How fun! That turned out really well. This should be a great project to go along with the books!
A new Pigeon book in June? I have to check it out!
My little one loves the Pigeon! In Kindergarten, she was able to take the classroom’s Pigeon plush home for a weekend. She had so much fun trying to keep him away from trouble, haha.
The Pigeon mask is super adorable!
By the way, I included your link to a blog post I wrote about the Best Books for Preschoolers. There, I also share kids activities related to those books. Since the Pigeon books are included in the list, your Pigeon mask fits perfectly! 🙂
The pigeon mask is so cute and I know my grandkids would love to make one. I need to get them the newest book!
