Growing up, I was incredibly shy. When I was 12, I was moved from private to public school and for the first time, since I was a toddler, had to make new friends. #ad While 8th grade prepared me a bit, high school was even harder since I only knew a handful of people there. I realized that in order to gain the confidence I was seriously lacking, I needed to become a part of something bigger than me. I tried out and made our high school’s dance team, the Titanaires, in 9th grade. Suddenly, that shy girl found herself. I continued to dance throughout high school and discovered the power of teamwork. We all walked out onto that field the same, no matter how skilled we were, what we looked like or what our home life was like. We came together as a family and put on a show that always had the fans in the bleachers cheering. Being a Titanaire changed me. 20+ years later, I’m still really good friends with a number of my teammates. Now, as the Mother of three girls, I always encourage them to find something they love, practice and become a part of something that will change their lives as it did mine. Whether it’s volleyball, gymnastics, dance or soccer, I watch my girls transform each and every time they practice, perform or play. Did you know that between the ages of 12 and 13, the number of girls who say they’re afraid to fail increases by 150%? By age 14, girls drop out of sports at twice the rate of boys. That’s why @Athleta is committed to helping keep girls in the game. Yesterday, I posted my deepest, darkest secret on my blog. It look me 24 hours to get the nerve to share it on here. I’ve been writing that post for a while. It probably didn’t go live the day I intended it to and it might disappear at some point. But enough is enough. Time for me to put my big girl panties on and stop lying to myself and everyone else. I hope you won’t think any different of me or judge me in any way. I’m still the same person, I’m just not pretending anymore. .

As someone that has suffered with both anxiety and depression for many years, I can tell you that there are signs that your loved one is suffering. #ad Let’s get real for a moment. While they play a large part in us becoming Mothers, periods are no fun. They also weren’t something that I knew a whole lot about up until a couple of months ago, if I’m being honest. But results from a recent survey got my attention. 3 in 5 women surveyed reported at least one symptom of heavy periods – and among those respondents, over half had not discussed them with a doctor (57%) Why? Most women have resigned to heavy periods as their reality, with 43% saying “it’s just normal for me” and 36% saying “I’ve just learned to live with it.” Sound familiar? I must have said those exact statements plenty of times over the last 30 years.
You don’t have to “live with it”. In just about a month...

Thinking back to last month and our stay in that cute little airbnb, it makes me so grateful for the opportunity to blog full-time. Not only do I get to work closely with companies that I love, but occasionally I get the opportunity to take our family on a little, but much needed vacation. It really is the best job I’ve ever had. Today on the blog, I’m continuing my series for bloggers and influencers and discussing what might be the scariest part of this job… pitching companies and applying to campaigns. Head over and check out my suggestions to nail those pitches. I look forward to hearing your thoughts! .

Thinking back to last month...

Today I had a plan. Wake up early, get the girls ready for their first day of school and then take the perfect first day of school picture to post on Instagram, where I would talk about how bittersweet it is to watch my girls grow up into these incredible young women.
But things don’t always go as we plan. Instead, Falynn and Iyla woke up at 3:30am, got ready for school and then came downstairs at 5:00am to let us know they were ready. 5:00am... two and a half hours before they actually needed to be at school. I rolled myself out of bed at around 6:50am, Super Dad made me some coffee and I quickly shooed them outside so I could take a picture and realized that Falynn was in a long sleeved shirt, a jacket, jeans and old sneakers. I’m pretty sure her hair wasn’t brushed either. Lucia wasn’t awake yet so it would be the first year without a first day of school picture of all three of them. 😫 Whatever. I was tired. So I quickly took a picture (swipe to see) and got them off to school. Lucia woke up late and I couldn’t take a picture of her because my camera lens kept fogging up. When we walked back into the house, the dog escaped, making her even later. 🤦🏻‍♀️ And my coffee’s cold. Anyway, since I couldn’t get the perfect first day of school picture, I hope you enjoy this shot of the girls and Super Dad in their @swimzip.

My girls are snackers. When they get home from school, they want to be able to grab a quick snack to take with them on the way to after-school activities, or to enjoy while they do their homework. #ad Peanut Butter is a huge hit in our home, but it can get messy, so when I found out about Windstone Farms Creamy Peanut Butter Portable Packets, I couldn't wait to grab some. Instead of making a huge mess (and forgetting to close the lid) with a regular container of peanut butter, the girls can grab one packet and easily add it to just about anything. Some of our favorites are bananas, apples, pretzels, celery or crackers. They have fun creating new combinations and I love that they come in convenient 1.15oz squeezable packets. So much less mess! They are also perfect for their lunchboxes. The peanut butter is so creamy and delicious! BTW, they are naturally gluten-free! @windstonefarms peanut butter packets are now available at your local @walmart. Make sure to pick some up, and check out our stories for a special offer from Ibotta! What will you put #WindstoneFarmsPB on?

Why We Chose To Rescue a Puppy from Big Dog Ranch Rescue

If You Love It, Share It!

We knew we wanted a dog. It’s been something that Super Dad and I have discussed for months, maybe even years. We knew we wanted to wait until the right time, but just like when you are contemplating having kids, is there really a “right time” to add to your family?  As soon as we moved to our new home, we both agreed that we had the space for a dog, maybe even two dogs. We had a list of everything we wanted, but at the top of the list was one thing that we weren’t willing to compromise on… the dog had to be a rescue.

Why We Chose a Rescue Dog

Well, the answer is simple. There are more than 6 million cats and dogs who enter U.S. animal shelters every single year.  Sure, you can buy one at a pet store, but pet stores sell animals for profit and most of those animals are bred in a breeding mill, as if they were products and not living, breathing creatures. They are shipped to the stores in cramped containers where they may arrive malnourished, sick, or injured. We refused to support that. It was never an option.

We found a few local rescues and I researched each of them. Friends and family gave raving reviews about Big Dog Ranch Rescue, so that was our first stop. The day after Christmas, we surprised the girls and they couldn’t have been more excited.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue is the largest no-kill dog rescue in the Southeastern United States.  Their mission is to be a leader in the national animal welfare movement, through compassionate, innovative rescue practices and transformative educational programs. Their goal is to give the gift of life to as many dogs as humanly possible, enrich the lives of those who adopt them, and in doing so, help create a better world.

Arriving at the ranch, we were totally blown away. Their new 33-acre, cage-free campus is designed to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome.  Over the past 13 years, Big Dog Ranch Rescue has saved over 25,000 dogs. Impressive, to say the least.  We were given a quick run down and filled out an online application on the spot. We walked into the first building and I fell in love with a gorgeous brown dog named Skip. Skip checked all of the boxes on our list and he was absolutely gorgeous, with bright, light brown eyes. I was imagining our future almost immediately.

While we waited patiently for the staff to finish feeding Skip so that we could meet him, a small dog, in the same room, named Sheba, stole my daughters’ hearts. They couldn’t stop pointing at her and talking about how cute she was. I kept my focus on Skip, thinking that he was the perfect dog. He was the right gender, the right size, the right breed and the right age. But about 5 minutes into our meet and greet, we realized that Skip wasn’t the one for us. He was considered a flight risk, was so skittish and couldn’t stop shaking. He just didn’t warm up to us no matter what we tried and it didn’t feel right. We asked the girls if they wanted to meet another dog and all three unanimously begged to meet Sheba.

Sheba is a Chinese Shar-Pei mix and although she was exactly the opposite of everything we thought we wanted, we quickly found out that she was the missing piece to our family puzzle. She was rescued from Puerto Rico in November with her 4 brothers and sisters (who we’d love to find). We must have spent about 20 minutes with her and when it was time to say goodbye, we knew we couldn’t leave her. Everyone that passed by, stopped to pet her. There was something about her that was so special, and everyone knew it. We knew it.

They say a dog chooses you and I would definitely agree. She bonded with all five of us and it just felt right. I must have asked the girls a handful of times if they were sure they didn’t want to meet other dogs before making a decision. After all, she was in the first building, first room and we didn’t check out any of the others. But all three girls agreed (which rarely happens). Before we knew it, we were filling out paperwork, paying the adoption fee and welcoming the newest addition to our family.

Seeing her in the backseat with the girls completely melted my heart. Anyone that doesn’t believe in love at first sight, should have watched them on the way home. They went out of their way to make sure she was comfortable. They were protecting her. It was so sweet. When we got home, they couldn’t wait to show her around, introduce her to our neighbors and get her things all set up. They volunteered to take on different tasks, to make her transition smooth. Our youngest even cleaned up her room, in record time, to make sure there was nothing on the floor for the puppy to chew on.

They even agreed on a new name for her… Elle.

Aside from the one nervous accident she had, minutes after we got home, she has not had one in the last week. She was given to us on a schedule and we kept her on that schedule. For a 6 month old puppy, she’s been absolutely amazing. It’s like bringing home a newborn who is potty trained, can walk and talk and feed itself.

We are planning to take her to puppy classes. We want her to learn how to be around other dogs. We have taught her to “sit”, but have so many other things we want her to learn. She’s so protective and sits at our feet at every opportunity. She loves to run and take walks. She’s such a love bug!

We can’t wait to share our experience with our new rescue dog. We hope that if you are considering getting a pet, that you go to a rescue as well. Do you have any pets? Comment below! We’d love to hear about them!

You did the right thing. Adopting a rescue dog instead of getting one from a pet shop is the best option when you are ready to have a pet. Our dog is a “rescue dog.” He was given to us because my friend’s daughter does not want him anymore. Poor doggy. But now he has a new home and is happily spoiled with us. 🙂

I think rescuing a dog is a great idea. It is not for everyone. For us we had to get a dog that was low allergen and didn’t shed so finding a reputable breeder was the way for us to go. What matters to me is the love you provide your dog once you have it home.

I love that you chose to adopt a dog, and Elle is so adorable. When my sons and I went to the shelter 5 years ago, they had the same reaction to our dog Theo. They didn’t even want to meet any other dogs. I took them to another shelter with puppies just to be sure, and they barely looked at the puppies. They knew that Theo was the dog for us. I’m looking forward to reading more about Elle!

Oh my, what a precious story. Our last dog was a rescued boxer and we couldn’t have been happier. He was perfect for us. I have only had boxers in my lifetime and I didn’t want to go through the puppy thing again and we choose a local boxer rescue. I know your family will forever love this precious pup.

We did the same thing this year. Although we didn’t go to a rescue. Someone needed to rehome their dog and it was definitely the best decision we ever made.

?! Congrats on Elle joining your family. Rescued animals are the best. We have a rescue as well, got him in bad condition though, nearly dead as a bait dog. He’s huge now, and we absolutely love him of course. Great info on rescuing one from a ranch.
