There’s something about a good, homemade stuffing (or dressing as some call it) that makes the whole Thanksgiving meal that much better. I have tried a number of different types of stuffing in my years, but I always found them to be very soggy and while many love it that way, I’m just not a fan of the mush. Once we had kids and I started wanting to cook entire thanksgiving feasts by myself, I realized that without the perfect stuffing recipe, my feast was going to be more of a flop. Over the years, I finally perfected the recipe and now, I’m excited to share it with all of you on the blog today (link is in my bio or you can swipe up in stories).

Apparently, it’s my birthday 🎂 … Isn’t it funny how as you get older, your birthday gets less and less exciting? I used to do a countdown, like a month in advance. I would remind everyone I saw. It was ridiculous. Now, if it wasn’t for the 3049823048 notifications that I get from FB, from all of the people that I haven’t heard from since last year, I might not even remember it’s my birthday at all. But since the cat’s out of the bag, yes, it’s my birthday. I’m 35 + shipping and handling and feel every bit my age, especially when I try to keep up with my kids . I’m spending the day packing for my birthday vacation (whoop!) and look forward to celebrating with my family! Since I can’t take you all with me, I’ve joined a bunch of really awesome bloggers to give away $430 on the blog today! So take a minute, click on the #linkinbio or swipe up in stories and enter to win! What would you do with the extra money?

While I do talk about it in DMs when people reach out, it occurred to me that many of you are unaware of my other blog, @thesuperblogcoach. The story behind it is that I had a couple of incredible women who taught me what I needed to know to become a successful blogger and influencer so I could support my family through this fun career. I wanted to make sure I did the same for others. It got difficult repeating things over and over again so I decided to create a site where I would blog solely about tips for bloggers and influencers, no matter where in their journey they are. That way, I could direct people over there and they can read at their own speed. I don’t charge for any of the info. It’s totally free. Just my way of paying it forward. I hope you’ll check it out and if you have anything you’re currently struggling with, let me know. I’ll add it to my topic list for future blog posts! Now tell me, did you know about thesuperblogcoach.com?

In honor of this smiling horse, and because yesterday’s pun tanked (guess most of you have never heard ‘what came first, the chicken or the egg?’)... today I’m sharing a horse joke. 🐎
Once upon a time there was a rich man that was driving past a farm, he looked over and saw a beautiful stallion standing in the field. The rich man thought, ‘Wow I gotta have him’ so he pulled into the farm’s entrance. He found the owner and said, “I want that horse out yonder in that field. How much do you want for him?” The farmer said, “He don’t look to good.” “Nonsense” said the rich man “I’ll pay you $1000 for him.” “But he don’t look to good,” said the farmer. The rich man sighed and said, “$2000 dollars is my final offer.” The farmer sold the beautiful horse to the rich man. One week later the rich man came back angry as ever and said, “Darn you, you sold me a blind horse!” Then the farmer smiled and said, “I TOLD YOU HE DIDN’T LOOK TOO GOOD!!!!” .

One thing I regret is not having newborn photos taken of all three girls. I’ve looked back at Falynn’s photos so many times over the years and they still give me all the feels. We were so blessed to have been able to have them taken by @jenpriesterphotography. Jen is so talented and really the sweetest person. I am forever grateful that she made the trip from Michigan to Florida to capture these for us. Did you have professional newborn pictures taken of your kids?

Why We Chose To Rescue a Puppy from Big Dog Ranch Rescue

We knew we wanted a dog. It’s been something that Super Dad and I have discussed for months, maybe even years. We knew we wanted to wait until the right time, but just like when you are contemplating having kids, is there really a “right time” to add to your family?  As soon as we moved to our new home, we both agreed that we had the space for a dog, maybe even two dogs. We had a list of everything we wanted, but at the top of the list was one thing that we weren’t willing to compromise on… the dog had to be a rescue.

Why We Chose a Rescue Dog

Well, the answer is simple. There are more than 6 million cats and dogs who enter U.S. animal shelters every single year.  Sure, you can buy one at a pet store, but pet stores sell animals for profit and most of those animals are bred in a breeding mill, as if they were products and not living, breathing creatures. They are shipped to the stores in cramped containers where they may arrive malnourished, sick, or injured. We refused to support that. It was never an option.

We found a few local rescues and I researched each of them. Friends and family gave raving reviews about Big Dog Ranch Rescue, so that was our first stop. The day after Christmas, we surprised the girls and they couldn’t have been more excited.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue is the largest no-kill dog rescue in the Southeastern United States.  Their mission is to be a leader in the national animal welfare movement, through compassionate, innovative rescue practices and transformative educational programs. Their goal is to give the gift of life to as many dogs as humanly possible, enrich the lives of those who adopt them, and in doing so, help create a better world.

Arriving at the ranch, we were totally blown away. Their new 33-acre, cage-free campus is designed to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome.  Over the past 13 years, Big Dog Ranch Rescue has saved over 25,000 dogs. Impressive, to say the least.  We were given a quick run down and filled out an online application on the spot. We walked into the first building and I fell in love with a gorgeous brown dog named Skip. Skip checked all of the boxes on our list and he was absolutely gorgeous, with bright, light brown eyes. I was imagining our future almost immediately.

While we waited patiently for the staff to finish feeding Skip so that we could meet him, a small dog, in the same room, named Sheba, stole my daughters’ hearts. They couldn’t stop pointing at her and talking about how cute she was. I kept my focus on Skip, thinking that he was the perfect dog. He was the right gender, the right size, the right breed and the right age. But about 5 minutes into our meet and greet, we realized that Skip wasn’t the one for us. He was considered a flight risk, was so skittish and couldn’t stop shaking. He just didn’t warm up to us no matter what we tried and it didn’t feel right. We asked the girls if they wanted to meet another dog and all three unanimously begged to meet Sheba.

Sheba is a Chinese Shar-Pei mix and although she was exactly the opposite of everything we thought we wanted, we quickly found out that she was the missing piece to our family puzzle. She was rescued from Puerto Rico in November with her 4 brothers and sisters (who we’d love to find). We must have spent about 20 minutes with her and when it was time to say goodbye, we knew we couldn’t leave her. Everyone that passed by, stopped to pet her. There was something about her that was so special, and everyone knew it. We knew it.

They say a dog chooses you and I would definitely agree. She bonded with all five of us and it just felt right. I must have asked the girls a handful of times if they were sure they didn’t want to meet other dogs before making a decision. After all, she was in the first building, first room and we didn’t check out any of the others. But all three girls agreed (which rarely happens). Before we knew it, we were filling out paperwork, paying the adoption fee and welcoming the newest addition to our family.

Seeing her in the backseat with the girls completely melted my heart. Anyone that doesn’t believe in love at first sight, should have watched them on the way home. They went out of their way to make sure she was comfortable. They were protecting her. It was so sweet. When we got home, they couldn’t wait to show her around, introduce her to our neighbors and get her things all set up. They volunteered to take on different tasks, to make her transition smooth. Our youngest even cleaned up her room, in record time, to make sure there was nothing on the floor for the puppy to chew on.

They even agreed on a new name for her… Elle.

Aside from the one nervous accident she had, minutes after we got home, she has not had one in the last week. She was given to us on a schedule and we kept her on that schedule. For a 6 month old puppy, she’s been absolutely amazing. It’s like bringing home a newborn who is potty trained, can walk and talk and feed itself.

We are planning to take her to puppy classes. We want her to learn how to be around other dogs. We have taught her to “sit”, but have so many other things we want her to learn. She’s so protective and sits at our feet at every opportunity. She loves to run and take walks. She’s such a love bug!

We can’t wait to share our experience with our new rescue dog. We hope that if you are considering getting a pet, that you go to a rescue as well. Do you have any pets? Comment below! We’d love to hear about them!

So great to rescue a dog! We did that one time, unfortunately, the healthcare paperwork was all wrong for the pup and we had to put her down within 2 months of getting her as she was in too much pain! But we would do it again in a heartbeat

You did the right thing. Adopting a rescue dog instead of getting one from a pet shop is the best option when you are ready to have a pet. Our dog is a “rescue dog.” He was given to us because my friend’s daughter does not want him anymore. Poor doggy. But now he has a new home and is happily spoiled with us. 🙂

I think rescuing a dog is a great idea. It is not for everyone. For us we had to get a dog that was low allergen and didn’t shed so finding a reputable breeder was the way for us to go. What matters to me is the love you provide your dog once you have it home.

I love that you chose to adopt a dog, and Elle is so adorable. When my sons and I went to the shelter 5 years ago, they had the same reaction to our dog Theo. They didn’t even want to meet any other dogs. I took them to another shelter with puppies just to be sure, and they barely looked at the puppies. They knew that Theo was the dog for us. I’m looking forward to reading more about Elle!

We have a rescue dog and wouldn’t have it any other way. So many dogs need good, safe homes.

Oh my, what a precious story. Our last dog was a rescued boxer and we couldn’t have been happier. He was perfect for us. I have only had boxers in my lifetime and I didn’t want to go through the puppy thing again and we choose a local boxer rescue. I know your family will forever love this precious pup.

I think getting a rescue is so important! Your new doggy is too cute. We just have cats, and they are both rescues. I hope the puppy classes go well!

We did the same thing this year. Although we didn’t go to a rescue. Someone needed to rehome their dog and it was definitely the best decision we ever made.

Our doggy is a rescue. He’s been with us for nearly 14 years. Can’t imagine our lives without him. He’s family.

?! Congrats on Elle joining your family. Rescued animals are the best. We have a rescue as well, got him in bad condition though, nearly dead as a bait dog. He’s huge now, and we absolutely love him of course. Great info on rescuing one from a ranch.
