Something that’s become a favorite of mine recently has been these documentary series that share one story per episode. Over the last two days, I watched all seven episodes. I have so many thoughts on each of these episodes, so here is my review of Rich and Shameless on HBO Max.
All of my reviews will contain just the basics – no spoilers. I hope that they will help you to find something new to watch or shows to avoid completely!
Rich and Shameless on HBO Max is TV-14
Documentary Series – 2022
From TNT and Raw comes “Rich & Shameless,” a seven-part series of premium films that tell the true stories of the successes, failures, thrills, and miseries that accompany the kind of wealth that few people can ever understand.
Episode List:
- The Crime Against Pam and Tommy
- Girls Gone Wild Exposed
- Pharma Bro vs. Wu-Tang Clan
- Where Did NBA Star Brian Williams Go?
- The Mysterious Disappearance of the Bitcoin Millionaire
- The Heiress and the Sex Cult
- Peter Nygard’s Unseen Tapes
My Thoughts on Rich and Shameless on HBO Max:
I’m going to share my thoughts on each episode since they are each about a different story. While I had heard of most of these stories (and probably watched a documentary or two on them), I love that Rich and Shameless dove into parts of the stories that I had never heard of (except for episode 5).
Episode 1 – The Crime Against Pam and Tommy
I’m not sure there is a person that was around in the 90s that doesn’t know about the Pam and Tommy tape. This episode dives into how it was leaked and who the main players were and how each was affected by it. After learning a bit more about the story, I’m going to follow this one up by watching Pam & Tommy on Netflix.
Episode 2 – Girls Gone Wild Exposed
Oh boy. This was a doozy. I lived through the Girls Gone Wild era. Thankfully I was never accidentally in the wrong place at the wrong time. I honestly feel for so many of the women who were subjected to the trickery of Joe Francis. I’m not sure I really knew how illegal things really became until I watched this episode. I definitely don’t remember the outcome of his trials either. Immediately after the episode, I went straight to his Instagram page (though it’s not verified which I find odd). Yikes! If you have time to read some of his recent posts, you’ll see what I mean.
Episode 3 – Pharma Bro vs. Wu-Tang Clan
This was the one story that I had never heard and I’m disappointed that I hadn’t. If you watch Rich and Shameless for no other reason besides this episode, do it. The entire episode had me shocked, bewildered, angry, and annoyed. Now I need to search for other documentaries about this particular situation.
Episode 4 – Where Did NBA Star Brian Willams Go?
I’m not a huge NBA fan, but I usually hear about sports-related crimes since I love true crime. I never heard of Brian Williams or what had happened to him until I watched this episode. I don’t love that a lot of this story is speculation. I definitely feel as though there is more to uncover with this one.
Episode 5 – The Mysterious Disappearance of the Bitcoin Millionaire
Let’s talk about this one. There is a documentary on Netflix called Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King that dives pretty deep into this story. We watched it when it was first released earlier this year, so the story was pretty fresh in my mind. Rich and Shameless pretty much took the gist of the story and shared it in this episode. There wasn’t anything new presented that we didn’t already know.
Episode 6 – The Heiress and the Sex Cult
I had seen a couple of different shows on NXIVM (because I may have a small obsession with cults) but Rich and Shameless focused on one of the main players that the other shows didn’t really talk about as much. I had no idea who Claire Bronfman and her family were until I watched Rich and Shameless.
Episode 7 – Peter Nygard’s Unseen Tapes
I’m glad they saved this episode for last. I’m afraid if it would have been first I may have never made it past that episode. If you know anything about Peter Nygard, you know that his story is beyond disgusting. Rich and Shameless seemed to somehow share additional things that Unseamly on Amazon Prime left out. If it was possible to dislike a person more after watching an hour-long episode, this one accomplished it. Yuck.
If you are a lover of true crime and documentaries like I am, I would definitely take the time to watch Rich and Shameless on HBO Max.
I give Rich and Shameless on HBO Max 4.5 out of 5 stars.
