Yesterday we visited a local farm and Falynn had the best time ever. She desperately wanted to hold a chicken but she didn’t know how. I love that she wasn’t afraid to ask for help. After learning the right way and trying a few times, she finally got the hang of it. I believe she held 3 different chickens. One 💩 on her shirt and we told her it was good luck. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 How was your weekend? Did you try anything new?

World Mental Health Day is a day that affects us all. Whether it’s you or a loved one, it seems as though more and more people are speaking out about their struggles with mental health and how it affects their lives. Since having been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder myself years ago, I’ve connected with so many people through social media and am so grateful for this platform where we can reach out to others and let them know that they aren’t alone. What hurts my heart the most, is hearing about the amount of kids that deal with anxiety these days. I wish there was a magic button we could press to take away anxiety from our kids, so that they can enjoy their childhood, but unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Fortunately, there are steps we can take. I am grateful to @theanxietyhealer who has written another guest post on our blog today for those with teenagers who may be struggling with anxiety. She shares what signs to look for and when to seek help. I hope you’ll take a moment to check it out and pass it onto anyone with teenage kids. Let’s help in any way we can. .

There are many special memories I can share about my Nana. She was funny, brutally honest and had the most beautiful smile. And while I can go on and on about her to anyone that will listen (or read), I love to cook her favorite dishes so that my family remembers her through her recipes. Today, since it’s Yom Kippur, I want to share one of my favorite recipes, Nana’s Slow Cooker Pot Roast with Homemade Gravy. Head to the blog for the full recipe. .

AD: Our schedules just got a little bit busier. The girls have started taking music lessons! Falynn and Lucia are learning to play the ukele and Iyla is learning to play the piano. While they are loving every second of it, they get hungry. I always have to make sure they grab some water and a snack. Or in Falynn's case, lots of snacks. This week, she found my stash of @JackLinksJerky in the pantry and decided one wasn't enough. Good thing Jack Link’s Beef Bars now comes in a multi-pack! You can find them in the nutritional bar aisle at @Target. The Bars are made with 100% Beef. 8 grams of protein, 70 calories, and gluten free. I'd say she made a great choice! Have you tried the new Jack Link's beef bars? .

Raising three girls is tough. They each have their own very different personalities. They don’t get along all the time. They seem to be in competition constantly. I can’t give a compliment to one without the other thinking that my compliment to one, meant I was insulting the other. And while I’m working on teaching them how to handle those situations, I can’t help but think that our female minds are wired that way and it saddens me. We are stronger when we support and encourage one another. So to all those girls out there who are busting their butts to make it, in a world where people are just waiting for you to make one wrong move so they can discard you, keep your head up. Find the people that will have your back no matter what. Surround yourself with others that care more about facts than gossip. And when you do find them, hold onto them, cherish them and have their back in every situation. Together, we can change the world. That’s the power when girls support girls. Have you found your tribe? Tag them and let them know what they mean to you. .

The last time I had a cold, someone on social media told me that I needed to get some elderberry syrup. I think my response was something along the lines of, “what in the world is an elderberry?” My 9-year-old, who happened to be sitting next to me, promptly responded that they are berries for elderly people. While we got a great laugh, I needed to know more. Oh, Gooooogle… I started researching and was inundated with information on this magical berry and all its benefits. I couldn’t believe that it was the first time I was hearing about it.  Where have I been? So, if you’re anything like me and totally in the dark about this, I thought I’d share all the information I learned about elderberries and next time you are under the weather, you’ll have all the info you need.

First, I should mention that I’m not a medical doctor and absolutely recommend that you speak to your physician before trying anything. While people have different reactions to different things, it’s important that you not put yourself in any danger.

What is an Elderberry?

Elderberries have been used in herbal traditions for centuries. I obviously missed the memo! A member of the honeysuckle family, they can grow as a shrub or small tree. Fully grown plants have white flowers during the spring, that turn into berries in the fall. The berries themselves are full of antioxidants.

Elderberry is one of the most commonly used medicinal plants in the world and is often taken as a supplement to treat cold and flu symptoms. The berries are tart and should be cooked prior to consuming them while the flowers can be eaten both raw or cooked. Cooked elderberries are used to make juice, jams, pies and even wine. The flowers can be boiled to make a sweet syrup.

Why are Elderberries Good for You?

Elderberries are believed to be a great source of fiber, vitamin A and vitamin C. They also contain iron, potassium, vitamin B6 and beta-carotene.

What are Elderberries Used to Treat?

Elderberries are commonly used to fight cold and flu symptoms but they can be used to soothe an upset stomach, detoxify, treat inflammation and may even help with weight loss.

Any Side Effects or Warnings?

Elderberry is not recommended for children under 18 or pregnant or breastfeeding women. While no adverse events have been reported, there is not enough data to confirm that it is safe for them.

Where Can I Find Elderberry?

Funny you should ask. When I first heard about them, I went to our local health food supermarkets but they didn’t carry them. I was told to check Amazon (which only carries them dried). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that the most recent season was the worst in history for immune challenges so I was on a mission to find it.

Great information you shared here. I would rather go the natural route to treat symptoms of cough and cold than to pop a pill which may have side effects in the long run. Elderberry supplements would be a good thing to have at home when we need it.
