We are always reading in our house, so we are super excited to be a #PenguinKidsPartner and share a new book by @robbtopp, called Wink. ⁣
⁣
This hilarious and heart-wrenching story is about surviving middle-school with an unthinkable diagnosis, rare eye cancer. It’s a story of survival and finding the music, magic and laughter in life’s weirdness. ⁣
⁣
Iyla is about half way through it and can’t put it down. She loves it because it shows that no matter what your situation, you can make the best of it! I love the message it shares. I’m always telling the girls to embrace their “weird” because it’s what makes them unique. The world would be such a boring place if we were all the same. ⁣
⁣
If your middle-reader is looking for a new book, we highly recommend Wink from @PenguinKids. It’s available now! ⁣

“What if we capture the beauty of the whole world in ONE big, bold book? A book that will transport readers to countries across the globe, one bedtime story at a time?” AD: What if I told you that book exists? The Book of Cultures is a 120 page book featuring 30 illustrated stories with characters from different countries, alongside activity pages with puzzles and fun facts. With everything going on in the world, now is the time to teach your children how important it is to embrace diverse perspectives, be tolerant and compassionate and understand how to cooperate with people from all corners of the planet. It’s funny the things that I miss most. Often when the girls achieved something big, we would take them to this little ice cream shop by our home for a treat. But we can’t do that now. Our state is under a stay home order through at least May. And while we don’t NEED to go places, I miss the freedom to be able to do so. I miss not having to disinfect every single grocery item before we can put it away. I miss impromptu trips to Target. ⁣
⁣
But... we haven’t left the house in almost three weeks. Because, eventually we will be able to get back to normal and drive wherever we want and spend money on things we probably don’t need. And our sacrifice for a month or two, or four, is so that our brave health workers and essential employees are not put in any additional danger. And to me, that’s worth the tiny inconvenience of being asked not to leave the house. ⁣

#ad This is a time of uncertainty throughout the world. As a self-employed family, we are having to make important decisions, to make sure that we are saving and spending our money wisely.⁣
⁣
After spending this past week looking at our bills, we realized that our mobile bill is way too high. We need to be able to stay connected, but we don’t need to spend a fortune to do it. We just switched Super Dad over to @mintmobile. ⁣

There are so many reasons to love Mint Mobile (and not just because Ryan Reynolds is the owner… yes, that Ryan Reynolds)! Mint Mobile lets you keep your number. We have another super fun Valentine idea for your kids! You only need 5 supplies (3-4 of which you probably already have in your home) and I’m even sharing a FREE PRINTABLE for you, so it’s even less work! Hurray for convenience! When I asked my 9-year-old what her friends liked, there was one thing that really stood out to me… lip balm! I immediately searched for lip balm in bulk and found a great 24 pack on Amazon. This idea is so simple, you’ll wish you had done it sooner. I know I’m kicking myself for all of those wasted years of buying boxed Valentine cards with those cheap lollipops. Without further ado, I’m excited to reveal our “You’re the Balm” Valentine idea!

Last week was bring your child to work day. I was skeptical at first, because it seemed like an excuse to skip school and I couldn’t imagine that my kids would do anything but watch TV and ask me for food every ten minutes. But let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised! Iyla, my 9-year-old, is the only one who decided to stay home and work with me. So after a few administrative tasks, which she rocked by the way, I told her that she was going to design and put together her Valentine cards.

She made a few sketches and I chose the one that I thought would be the easiest for us to make. I designed the cards (with her help of course). It was her idea to use the hearts at the end of the fuse. She chose the wording too. Once they were printed, she used our paper-cutter to cut them out and attached all of the lip balms to the card stock.

I think we may have spent a total of 30 minutes on the entire project (not including the time it took to photograph). Iyla even took some of the pictures! She did a tremendous job. And she’s going to be even more proud when she hands them out to her friends on Valentine’s Day and tells them that she made something that was totally Pinterest worthy!
