As parents, we wear many hats.  We are boo-boo kissers, bad dream slayers, bully protectors, best friends and strict rule makers.  The most important job we have is to set the best example for our kids that we can. We can’t just tell them what to do, we need to show them right from wrong.  In our house, that means showing them that we all need to eat healthy, take our multivitamins and exercise as often as we can.  Here are the 5 ways we stay healthy, as a family.

1. EAT HEALTHY

Since our kids were babies, we’ve always fed them fruits and veggies.  You name it, my kids love it.  Their favorite side dish is broccoli, believe it or not.  Most days, they would rather eat a salad than sugary snacks.  At the grocery store, they often ask for pomegranates seeds and strawberries. We never really made a big deal out of the healthy foods, we just gave it to them.  They got used to eating them and now, they love them. And while they are great eaters, it’s so important for us to make sure they are getting their daily allowance of fruits and vegetables, which can be hard sometimes.

2. TAKE VITAMINS

While we eat as healthy as we can, we know that somedays we just can’t get in all of the nutrients our bodies need, or, we just feel like eating donuts (who doesn’t love a good donut?).  Our family takes One a Day with Nature’s Medley, a new line of multivitamins, now available at Walmart stores nationwide.  They are available in Men’s, Women’s and Kids, so we can all take them together.  It’s the only complete multivitamin with natural antioxidants from one total USDA serving size of fruits and vegetables. So the good news is, if you or your kids aren’t veggie and fruit lovers or don’t get the amount of servings you should, One a Day with Nature’s Medley can help fill the gaps for the key nutrients you need.  Plus, they are gummies which are way more fun and tasty, without the artificial flavors and sweeteners and they are just as yummy!

3. RIDE BICYCLES

At least 3 times a week, we ride around our neighborhood, as a family.  When the weather permits, we pick up the girls at their bus stop, on our bikes.  Not only are we saving gas (and the planet) but we are getting that necessary exercise in.  The girls love to ride. They don’t think of it as work, but more as play.  We’ll often make it a race to see who can get around the neighborhood first or who can ride the longest.  It’s a great leg workout, will help you increase your Vitamin D levels and it can make you feel like a kid again. Another plus is getting away from the technology that we tend to live in front of these days.

4. DANCE PARTIES

Since our girls were little, they’ve always loved dance.  Our oldest two were competitive dancers for years.  It’s something that brings a smile to our face and we love to incorporate it into our daily routine by having a little family dance party.  If we’re cleaning, we turn up the music and dance as we wipe, sweep and mop.  It makes chores more fun and gets our endorphins flowing.  What we love about dance the most is that it’s fun.  We are moving, shaking and making up goofy dance moves and we tend to forget that we are actually exercising.  We always feel better after we’ve danced. It lifts our mood and gives us a push to continue on with our day.

5. YOGA + MEDITATION

10 minutes of silence is rare when you’re a parent.  So, when my middle daughter asked if we could meditate and do yoga together, I jumped at the chance.  As often as we can, we roll out the yoga mat and get our meditation on.  Of course, our balance isn’t half as good as the girls so there is always a little laughter going on, but it’s a great opportunity for us to relax our minds. You will find that our 5-year-old takes it very seriously.  The more I learn about meditation, the more I love it.  It’s great for strengthening your focus and relieving stress and it’s not just great for adults. Kids can benefit from it as well.

  • Vitamins are so important! When my kids were younger I always gave them, and they loved them. So it was an easy way to keep them healthy and strong

  • All of those are great. Although I really couldn’t do the vitamin one. I hated it as a child. And as long as you are eating healthy it’s the most important thing.

  • Thank you for your tips 🙂 I believe in broccoli – my two years old Daughter also likes it much 😉 Nutrition is a very important thing, especially for little ones as long as it determines their future lifestyle. I never gave any sweet or junk food to her (sometimes I give her home made apple- or cheesecake). Sounds obvious, but not for everyone. I met already many parents and grandparents very shocked with my decisions and one of them was even trying to give chips to my Baby… Fortunately, she couldn’t manage.

  • Exercise and eating healthfully, those are my two big things – and I have been rubbing off on my husband, hard core 😉

  • Yes keeping family healthy is main thing, I take vitamins but as big tablets I would like to check it out gummies. these are wonderful tips.
