I’ve done it, ladies and gentlemen. I’ve finally created an air fryer recipe that my kids can’t get enough of. These air fryer Doritos onion rings are packed with flavor and don’t have the grease that typical onion rings have!
A little backstory (you knew it was coming)… I found out that National Onion Ring Day was coming up and while I love a deep-fried onion ring, our family has been trying to make better decisions when it comes to food.
I knew we were going to make these onion rings in the air fryer, but I wanted to use something more flavorful than panko breadcrumbs. I put together a list of four of my top choices and had one of my daughters choose which she thought would taste the best. Her choice was Cool Ranch Doritos.
You can use any flavor of Doritos you’d like for this recipe. In fact, we will likely try the Sweet Spicy Chili flavor last time as that’s my daughters’ new favorite. Switching it up will give your air fryer Doritos onion rings a different flavor every time!
While you don’t need a dipping sauce, I typically find air-fried food a little on the dry side, so I always whip up a quick dip. For these onion rings, we chose ranch dressing. It was the perfect flavor combo and you don’t have to do anything extra. Just pour from the bottle straight into a little dipping dish!
Making onion rings can get messy but I have a couple of tips to help with that.
First, you’ll want to separate the Doritos crumbs and flour in half. Put half into the bowl at a time. When they start to get a little icky, dump out the yucky parts and put in the fresh stash.
Next, use both of your hands and assign one thing per hand. For example, I’ll use my right hand to transfer the onion ring from the buttermilk/egg mixture into the flour and back into the buttermilk/egg mixture. Then, I’ll use the left hand to coat the onion ring in the Doritos crumbs.
I usually make one onion at a time. That’s enough to feed our family of 5. If you want to make more, you can freeze the leftovers and then pop them back into the air fryer for a couple of minutes to reheat.
These air fryer Doritos onion rings are perfect for a midday snack, a side dish, or for a party! Even kids that don’t love onions, will love them (at least mine do). They are a great kid-friendly dish!
The steps in the photos above, show exactly how I make these delicious air fryer Doritos onion rings.
Step 1: Gather your ingredients and three separate bowls.
Step 2: Using a food processor, grind the Doritos down until they are the consistency of panko bread crumbs.
Step 3: Mix buttermilk and egg together in one bowl.
Step 4: Slice onion into thick slices and then break apart into rings.
Step 5: Dip one of your onion rings into the buttermilk/egg mixture.
Step 6: Transfer the onion ring to the bowl with the flour in it and cover. Shake off excess.
Step 7: Dip the onion ring into the buttermilk/egg mixture again.
Step 8: Transfer the onion ring to the bowl with the Doritos crumbs in it and cover. Shake off excess.
Step 9: Repeat and place the prepared onion rings into the air fryer basket. Cook on 360º for 7 minutes.
Step 10: Serve with ranch dressing.
Now that you know a little bit about these air fryer Doritos onion rings, I’m excited to share our recipe.
