Eating seasonal produce is not only important to the environment, but also provides benefits to your health as well as your wallet. While Florida farmers make it easy for us to eat fresh produce year-round, I recently visited my local Publix Supermarket to pick up some in-season, local produce. I not only got a shopping cart full of fresh, delicious fruits and veggies, but I also saved money by purchasing in-season. Just two of the benefits of in-season produce.
What I love most about my local Publix (and there’s a list of reasons I love my store), I love the produce section. Since we changed to our healthier lifestyle, it’s the department we spend the most time (and money) in. Everything is displayed beautifully and is kept fresh with their misting system. I can always count on our Publix to offer everything we need, at great prices.
Save Money
In our last visit, I picked up bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, mushrooms, radish, snap beans and cabbage. All of these in-season fruits and veggies sported the “Fresh from Florida” label as well as a great price! When you buy in-season produce, you are buying the fruits and veggies when they are at the highest supply. Since they cost the farmers less to harvest and deliver to your local supermarket, the savings are then passed onto you. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
Fresh From Florida
Another benefit of in-season produce is the taste. Because they are grown locally, it takes less time to get to your local store. Less travel time means less chances for it to go bad before it gets to your table. Fresh produce is so important to us because, like most families, we are on a budget. We just don’t have the money to spend on anything that will go bad before we have the chance to eat it.
Support Your Local Farmers
You love your community, so why not support your local farmers? Buying in-season, local produce means you are supporting those incredible people that work so hard to bring you the freshest, tastiest fruits and veggies. While we love to visit local farmer’s markets, we don’t always have the time. I’m grateful for our local Publix, where I can always pick up produce that is just as fresh.

I always try to buy in season, especially fruit. Veggies can sort of pass my taste test most of the time but not fruit! I actually prefer to buy at our local fruit farm as well. Great tips here I will put into action!
Soooooooo…. I don’t think I really eat in season produce much, I just keep eating spinach and sweet potatoes – EVERY DAY – never really noticing what month they’re “in season” – haha!
There’s nothing better than fresh fruits and vegetables. I try to shop at local farmers’ markets whenever I can. The better taste, texture and richness of nutrients is well worth any price difference.
Great post! I live in Canada, so we can’t rely on in season produce in the winter. I do try to eat US products when I can as they are closer to home then other places!
I always think that in season produce tastes so much better, when you buy out of season it often seems not quite so sweet and juicy.
Something I love about in season fruit is that typically it taste a lot better then something that is off season. For example oranges are in season in January and February at least where I live and once we get to March and April they do not taste good or at least not as good as they did in January February.
I always plan my meals around fresh produce. It tastes better, it lasts longer, and it’s generally cheaper. It’s a winner all the way around.
