Eating seasonal produce is not only important to the environment, but also provides benefits to your health as well as your wallet. While Florida farmers make it easy for us to eat fresh produce year-round, I recently visited my local Publix Supermarket to pick up some in-season, local produce.  I not only got a shopping cart full of fresh, delicious fruits and veggies, but I also saved money by purchasing in-season.  Just two of the benefits of in-season produce.

What I love most about my local Publix (and there’s a list of reasons I love my store), I love the produce section. Since we changed to our healthier lifestyle, it’s the department we spend the most time (and money) in.  Everything is displayed beautifully and is kept fresh with their misting system. I can always count on our Publix to offer everything we need, at great prices.

Save Money

In our last visit, I picked up bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, mushrooms, radish, snap beans and cabbage.  All of these in-season fruits and veggies sported the “Fresh from Florida” label as well as a great price!  When you buy in-season produce, you are buying the fruits and veggies when they are at the highest supply.  Since they cost the farmers less to harvest and deliver to your local supermarket, the savings are then passed onto you.  Makes sense, doesn’t it?

Fresh From Florida

Another benefit of in-season produce is the taste.  Because they are grown locally, it takes less time to get to your local store.  Less travel time means less chances for it to go bad before it gets to your table.  Fresh produce is so important to us because, like most families, we are on a budget. We just don’t have the money to spend on anything that will go bad before we have the chance to eat it.

Support Your Local Farmers

You love your community, so why not support your local farmers?  Buying in-season, local produce means you are supporting those incredible people that work so hard to bring you the freshest, tastiest fruits and veggies.  While we love to visit local farmer’s markets, we don’t always have the time.  I’m grateful for our local Publix, where I can always pick up produce that is just as fresh.

  • Supporting your local farms is so important. We have many dairy farms by where we live and have a great family of farmers markets to buy fresh produce.

  • I have never quite cared for fruits and veggies that were out of season. They always seem to taste…tasteless, ha! They’re definitely a lot more expensive too.

  • Oh wow, I love these. I love eating fresh food. Greatting from Florida Produce. And it’s a great thing that buying this will support our local farmers.

  • I think it is so important to eat in season. It is better for the environment! I wish I could grow my food all year round – the season is so short in Colorado!
