What do you do when you live in Florida and your kids have always wanted to have a snow ball fight? You make your own snow! While it’s not icy or even cold, it is an easy and fun craft for kids that live in warmer climate areas. With just 2 main ingredients, you can make a big batch of snow for less than $5!

When I told my girls that we would be making snow, they were ecstatic. Like most kids, they love to make slime, so this was along the same lines for them. It’s a fun and inexpensive experiment that they will love.

How to Make DIY Snow

  • 1lb box baking soda
  • Approx 1/2 container shaving cream

Add both ingredients to a bowl and mix together with your hands until easily formed into a snowball.

Once you’ve created your snow, it’s time to have a little fun. You can build a snowman or have a snow fight. My kids are planning on making a much bigger batch next time so that they can make snow angels in our backyard.

Our Suggestions

While this is a bit messy, you can make things easier on yourself by putting a large sheet or towel down on the floor. If you choose to have a snow fight, like my girls did, do it in your front or back yard, where it can easily be washed away. Make sure that they don’t aim for the face as I wouldn’t want to get any of it in their eyes. Also, have your kids wash their hands right after they are done and make sure they don’t put any in their mouth.  I know, common sense, but I wouldn’t be a protective Mama if I didn’t share concerns (especially for the little ones).

  • My boys would have a blast with this. I think they would think having snow is cool as we dont get enough here to make snow balls.

  • I am in South Africa, we never have a white Christmas but do get snow up in the mountains during winter. This snow idea is so cool, we will fake it till we make it with this lol

  • How fun to make snow when nature doesn’t provide it! Your kids must have been so excited. Good for you for your creativity. We lived in Texas for years and only got a dusting of snow most winters. I wish I had known about this then — I would have loved to make snow with my kids. Thanks for your post.

  • My daughter will want to make this for sure. She loves snow, but we don’t get a lot of it in Texas.

  • So baking soda and shaving cream could actually make a snowball? Now that’s very creative I’d have never thought of. No wonder your daughters were super happy!

  • Now this could be totally tons of fun and totally dangerous with some of the older kids. Wonderful family idea.

  • This sounds like a lot of fun to do! We do not get a lot of snow where I live this would be fun for the kids to do a snowball fight with.
