If you’ve ever been to Disney, particularly in the Summertime, you’ve probably stopped for a dole whip. It’s probably one of the most refreshing things I’ve ever had in my life and it always cools our body temp down quickly because this Florida heat is no joke! Since we will not likely be going to Disney World anytime soon, I thought I would bring a little bit of Disney into our home by making a healthier, dairy-free version in the form of dole whip popsicles.

My kids love to make them almost as much as they love to eat them. If you leave out the optional powdered sugar, they contain nothing but healthy ingredients and are a great treat any time of year.

What is the real dole whip made of?

When Disney released their recipe to the public, it called for pineapple juice, frozen pineapple chunks, and vanilla ice cream.

Are these dole whip popsicles dairy-free?

Yes, they are! Our recipe, which is pretty close to the version that Dole has on their own website, contains unsweetened coconut milk, which makes these dole whip popsicles naturally lactose-free!

Can I use fresh pineapple?

You absolutely can! You will need to make sure it’s ripe, remove the core and chop it up into small chunks so that it can be easily blended. We find it’s more convenient to use crushed pineapple in a can.

What type of popsicle mold should I get?

There are a bunch of great popsicle molds available in stores or online. We use a BPA-free popsicle mold that I found on Amazon. It’s of great quality and is easy to use. Once they are frozen, just run the bottom under hot water for a few seconds and the popsicles slide right out.

What is the easiest way to get the mix into the popsicle mold?

We find it easiest to use a funnel, but you can also use a spoon. Do whatever is easiest for you!

Can I serve this in a dish instead of as a popsicle?

Yes! You’ll want to freeze the pineapple and banana chunks first. Then, add everything to your food processor and blend until smooth. You can then scoop it out and serve right away or place it into the freezer until it’s at your desired consistency.

How can I make these taste more like the dole whip from Disney?

You can substitute the coconut milk for 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream. Leave out the banana, the lime juice, and the powdered sugar. Instead, use 2 cups of pineapple chunks and 4 oz pineapple juice. Blend this all in a blender or food processor and then transfer it to your popsicle mold.

If I leave out the powdered sugar, are they still sweet?

Yes! Thanks to the natural sweetness of the banana and pineapple, you won’t miss the sugar. If you prefer them to be a bit sweeter, you can also use sweetened coconut milk instead of unsweetened.

steps to make dole whip popsicles

The steps in the photos above, show exactly how I make these dole whip popsicles.

Step 1: Add all ingredients to your food processor.

Step 2: Blend until fully combined and smooth (it will look like applesauce).

Step 3: Place the mixture into your popsicle mold.

Step 4: Add your popsicle sticks and freeze until solid.

Now that you know a little bit about these dole whip popsicles, I’m excited to share our recipe.
