It was a Sunday morning. Usually Super Dad wakes up and heads to the kitchen to make us a big breakfast. We always look forward to his breakfast! That particular day, he wanted to make pancakes and breakfast potatoes, but as I walked into the kitchen, he realized we were out of the boxed pancake mix.  He wanted to run to the store to pick up some more and I reminded him that we could make our own homemade pancake mix.

I realized that although I had always known how to make pancake mix, we had become lazy over the years and just purchased the boxed mix. That was actually the last box we purchased. We’ve been making it and storing it ever since.

Why buy the boxed pancake mix when you can make your own from ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry? It's super easy too!

I love a number of things about this mix:

We Know What’s In It

There are no surprises when you make your own pancake mix. You know exactly what’s inside. There are no strange, unpronounceable names or chemicals.

We Have Everything In the Pantry

You might be surprised to find out that everything you need for this pancake mix is probably already in your pantry. Flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. That’s it.

We Will Never Run Out of Pancake Mix Again

Knowing that we can whip up a new batch in just minutes, means we will never run out of pancake mix again.

You do want to make sure to store it in an airtight container and use it within 2 weeks if possible. I purchased an acrylic canister set and I love them! I even customized them with my Cricut Joy so I can remember what’s inside (plus they look adorable!).

Now that you know a little about what brought this pancake mix into our family’s kitchen, I’m excited to share the recipe with you. If you do make it, I’d love for you to share a photo and tag us on social media or comment below and let me know what you think. We love feedback from our readers!

  • What a great idea to mix your own pancake flour and keep for the days that you need. I tend to make mine from scratch and usually on weekends when I have extra time.

  • Oh wow. I will have to do this tomorrow. You are right, I also have everything I need in my pantry to make pancake mix. Thank you so much. Now my sons won’t be bugging me to get pre-packaged pancake mix. I can just make some and keep it in stock for them to use when they want to make pancakes.

    • I like this article, it has inspired me to start thinking of making my own pancake mix instead of buying them always. Moreover it will be healthier to make it yourself.

  • I feel so stupid for buying pancake mixes off the shelf!!! This is amazing!!! I can’t wait to test your recipe, super excited about it.

  • We’ve been making our own pancake mix for years now, especially because one of my sons can only eat gluten free. But there is this one mix from Trader Joe’s for gluten free pumpkin pancakes that is sooo amazing. We buy several boxes when it comes in season and still run out by Christmas time.

  • LOVE this, as I always find that making your own is so much better than the shop bought stuff xx
