Are you looking for a quick and easy gift idea? If you love handmade, inexpensive, but thoughtful gifts that you can make with the whole family, you’ll want to check out this tutorial on how to make chocolate covered pretzels. Chocolate covered pretzels are a hit with so many because of their salty and sweet flavor combo. Plus, you can tailor the flavors to whoever you are gifting them to, or give them a variety! Wrap them up in a little cellophane or a reusable box and you have the perfect gift for anyone on your list!

When I first mentioned on the blog that I used to work in a chocolate factory, I got a lot of questions about the tricks to making chocolate covered treats. I think you’ll be surprised how very easy it is to cover anything in chocolate. While we used to use our fingers in the chocolate factory, you can use a fork which is a little less messy!

For the sake of giving you a variety of flavor options, we tested out five different flavors which were all a big hit! You can experiment with your own flavors too. The possibilities are endless!

Here are the flavors we tried this time around:

Milk Chocolate with Sprinkles – dip your pretzel in melted milk chocolate and sprinkle any color or shaped sprinkles on top.

Dark Chocolate with White Chocolate Drizzle – dip your pretzel in melted dark chocolate and drizzle melted white chocolate on top.

Semi Sweet Chocolate with Crushed Peppermints – dip your pretzel in melted semi-sweet chocolate. Crush soft peppermint candy by putting it in a sealable bag and leaving it open just a bit (so it doesn’t pop) and use a hammer or similar kitchen tool to crush them into small pieces. Make sure to get the soft peppermint candy – those are so much easier to chew!

Milk Chocolate and Peanut Butter with Crushed Peanuts – dip your pretzel into melted milk chocolate and peanut butter morsels and top with crushed peanuts.

Espresso Chocolate with Caramel Drizzle – dip your pretzel into melted espresso chips and drizzle caramel on top. You may have to put this one in the freezer for the caramel to harden, depending on the type of caramel you use.

While you can make this with just about any sized pretzels, we like to use the big, old tyme pretzels. They are bigger and will require less work than making a bunch of little chocolate covered pretzels. If you can’t find those, you can also use sour dough pretzels which are also larger!

While there are many ways to melt chocolate, putting it in a microwave safe dish and microwaving for 20-30 seconds at a time works best. Just take out in between each 20-30 second interval, stir and put back in until the chocolate is completely smooth and melted. If you don’t have a microwave, you can also use a blow dryer. Point the blow dryer into the dish (make sure it’s heat resistant) and stir until completely smooth and melted.
