I finally tried the TikTok air fryer pasta chips trend and I’m not mad about it. I haven’t had a chip in months, since I started eating better. So, I figured, if I was going to make them and try them, they had to be lower carbs to fit with my new way of eating.
My 12-year-old and I sat down and brainstormed some flavor ideas. She came up with some good ones too. At the top of her list were pepperoni pizza or pickle flavor. As much as I love how both of those sounds, we decided to go with her third choice, garlic bread!
The ingredients seemed easier — butter, garlic, parsley, salt, and parmesan cheese. We ran the first batch and when we couldn’t stop “tasting” them, we knew we had a winner.
What makes these air fryer pasta chips lower carb?
So what makes them lower carb? Well, I used chickpea pasta instead of traditional pasta. I can honestly say that you can’t tell the difference. Chickpea pasta has more protein, more than twice the fiber, and almost half of the carbs that regular pasta does.
Do you have to use a specific pasta for these air fryer pasta chips?
We chose Gemelli pasta, but you are welcome to use any kind for your air fryer pasta chips. Depending on the shape and size of chip that feels best to you, choose accordingly. I think these would be great with bowties or shells.
Should I cook the pasta any differently?
If the pasta instructions have a cooking time range, go with the lower of the two. For example, the chickpea pasta says 7-9 minutes, so I cooked ours for 7. This will make a difference when you air fry them.
Also, one of my favorite Amazon purchases is this Snap N Strain Strainer, Clip On Silicone Colander. It snaps right onto the side of any pan (or bowl) and makes straining so much easier!
What type of oil should I use?
I highly recommend a butter-flavored oil, though you can use any oil you have in the house. We just love the extra buttery flavor of garlic bread, so this was a great option for us. The great part about an air fryer is that it doesn’t need a lot of oil to cook your favorite foods.
Can I bake these air fryer pasta chips in an oven?
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can also bake these in the oven! I haven’t tried them that way, and have been told that they may not be as crispy, but don’t let that discourage you from trying. Bake them at 400º for 20-25 minutes, tossing a few times.
Do you have an air fryer you recommend?
Yes, actually I do! I have the PowerXL 5qt Single Basket Air Fryer and I love it! It’s a little larger than most, but it’s the perfect size for a family! It’s very easy to use and even easier to clean.
Does it matter what type of parmesan cheese I use?
We used grated parmesan, because I thought it would coat the pasta better, but this is totally up to you. I bet freshly grated parmesan would be delicious on these air fryer pasta chips too!
Do I need a dipping sauce?
A dipping sauce is totally up to you. I personally think that these lower carb air fryer pasta chips are good enough on their own. If you’re going to choose a dipping sauce for this garlic bread flavor, I would recommend marinara sauce!
Do air fryer pasta chips taste like raw pasta?
Surprisingly, they don’t! They are crunchy and packed with flavor! We forgot we were eating pasta after the first bite. They are the perfect snack.
