When my husband and I decided to get fit and healthy this year, we knew that we needed each other for moral support if we were really going to succeed. While we have successfully begun to change our diet, we weren’t exercising the way we knew we needed to. We tried promising each other that we would walk every morning or night, but we just got busy with work and life and found ourselves remembering at the end of the day, too tired to do anything about it. We knew we needed something to hold us accountable and we knew that the Garmin vívoactive® 3 smart watch was the perfect tool for us. What we didn’t know was that it would make our relationship with each other and our kids, that much better.
Our girls had received their vivofit jr. 2 trackers from Garmin in December of last year. They still wear them daily and still find themselves competing to see who can get the highest activity each day. They are being challenged to stay active, in a fun, kid-friendly way.
When our smart watches arrived, they were out of the box within minutes. My husband and I are both huge technology lovers and a new gadget is something we can’t wait to explore, set up and learn. I love that Garmin sent us matching trackers, his in black and mine in white. Although they are identical, we were able to set them up differently, working best for each of us. We were able to personalize our watches, choosing from thousands of free watch faces, apps and widgets from their Connect IQ™ store.
There are so many things that this smart watch can do. We can turn on our lights at home and find out when the rain will start so we can plan our days and activities. There are so many options, we haven’t even gotten to check them all out yet, but I love that we can learn something new every day!
Like any good piece of technology, our Garmin vívoactive® 3 connects to an app on our phone. The app gives us an additional resource to track our day, week and month. Garmin Connect is a thriving online community where people on the go can connect and compete by joining challenges, encourage each other’s successes and even share their triumphs via social media. Best of all, Garmin Connect is free! But it’s not connecting with strangers that we found the most surprising, it was the stronger connection we have now with each other and our kids.
We love opening up our app, at the end of a long day and checking out and comparing our stats. It’s become a little competition between the both of us, just as it is for our daughters. We are challenging each other to meet our individual goals and when we are a little behind on activity, we make it a point to take a walk around our community or a neighborhood park (usually with all three kids). It’s become a family bonding experience that we wouldn’t trade for anything. It gives us time away from the television and our screens to connect, laugh and be together.
Though we limit our screen time and put away our phones when we are connecting as a family, we can still stay connected with our vívoactive 3 smartwatch so we don’t miss anything important. Since they are paired with our smartphones, we can receive and even respond to text messages and see social media updates, emails and more right on our wrist!
Not only is it safe for swimming and showering, its Garmin Chroma Display™ is easy to read — even in direct sunlight — and housed under extra-durable glass. It also features the Side Swipe™ interface, which makes for quick scrolling and swift navigation of menus and widgets.

I love that this is something you do together. I would like to start this with my husband. We could encourage each other to be better!
Walking is such an awesome activity. And a great way to spend time together as a family. Looks like you have some great tools to help motivate you!
How cool do those watches look! I love the idea of walking together and looking to help make a healthier relationship by spending time together and a healthier you!
These look so stylish! I have been thinking about getting something like a Smart Watch for a while now.
Those look like really cool fitness trackers/timepieces! I would want to have one, but just wanted to know if it is user-friendly? I get technologically challenged at times that is why I stick to my old, trusted pedometer.
My husband and I need to do something like this. I have been exercising but it would be a lot easier for me to do it if my husband was doing it also. What a great idea. Maybe I can convince him to do it if I give him a “toy” like this.
I have a SmartWatch and I love it. It tracks so many things and makes me wonder what I ever did before it. Congratulations to you and your husband on your partnership path to health.
