When it first got released, it seemed like everyone was talking about the Starbucks iced brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso. I rushed to Starbucks to try it and it seemed to be unavailable for months. It got to the point where I would check every morning, only to be disappointed day after day.
When I finally got to try it, I have to be 100% honest… I wasn’t super excited about it. It tastes a lot like sweetened milk. I got very little espresso taste. Although, I’m used to my iced caramel macchiato, so I could very well be comparing the amount and type of espresso, and I shouldn’t do that since they are very different drinks.
Over time, I learned to love the Starbucks iced brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso and have ordered it anytime that it’s been available (which still doesn’t seem to be very often).
According to the Starbucks website, the Starbucks iced brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso is described as Starbucks® Blonde espresso, brown sugar and cinnamon together, and then top it off with oatmilk and ice for a cool lift to power you through your day. So let’s see if we were able to recreate it at home.
Before I share our Starbucks iced brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso copycat recipe, let me answer a few questions.
Do I need an espresso maker?
While it’s definitely better to brew the coffee in an espresso maker, you can also brew it like regular coffee if you don’t have an espresso maker at home. We just recently received a Galanz Retro Espresso Maker — shown in the photos. It’s a gorgeous red color, a super fun retro design and makes the perfect cup of espresso.
Do I need to use a specific type of coffee?
You can use any type of espresso or coffee that you have on hand. Starbucks uses a blonde roast, Verdana Blend which can be purchased in local grocery stores and likely in Starbucks retail locations. Since they were sold out in my store, I just used one of the ground Starbucks coffee blends we had in our home already.
What type of shaker is best?
I purchased an amazing OXO cocktail shaker on Amazon. A couple of reasons why I love it. It doubles as a cup. So if you really wanted to, you could just add ice and go. I love that it’s insulated and has a cap that stops any liquid from leaking out.
What if I don’t like oat milk?
The Starbucks iced brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso is made with oat milk, but the beauty of making it at home is that you can make it however you’d like. So if you prefer a different type of milk, you can use whichever type you’d prefer.
What if it’s too sweet or not sweet enough for me?
You can adjust the amount of brown sugar according to your taste. I find one tablespoon to be the perfect amount of sweetness for me. But you can adjust that.
