We love Halloween because it’s an opportunity for our girls to express their individuality and personality! Since buying a ready-made costume can get pretty pricey and limit you to only a handful of options, I challenged our teenager to create her own costume, using only pieces found at our local thrift store. I was pleasantly surprised to see that she was able to put together this DIY Frida Kahlo costume for under $5! Now that’s a great deal.
Frida Kahlo, born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon, was born in July of 1907 and was an incredible Mexican painter, known mostly for her self-portraits and portraits inspired by nature and Mexican artifacts. As a mother of three daughters, it’s so important for me to teach my girls about strong, talented women who were able to turn their dreams into success. I love that Lucia chose to honor Frida Kahlo and her own Hispanic heritage by choosing this particular costume as one of her looks. I am so proud of her.
What You’ll Need for Your DIY Frida Kahlo Costume
Colorful Dress: Until Lucia found this dress, she wasn’t sure what her 2nd DIY costume was going to be. But as soon as she found it, the colorful, fun nature of it immediately reminded her of Frida Kahlo. She was able to find this adorable floral dress for only $4.99.
Jewelry: In the majority of Frida Kahlo’s photos, she is wearing long earrings and a thick gold chain. Lucia had these pieces in her jewelry box already.
Floral Headband: Frida Kahlo almost always had flowers in her hair in her photos. You have a couple of options here. You can either buy some synthetic flowers at your local craft store or find a headband with flowers already on it. Lucia had this particular headband already.
Makeup: Clearly it would have been a better idea to create a unibrow with a brown/black eyebrow pencil, but since Frida Kahlo didn’t actually have a unibrow, she just chose to accentuate it in her self-portraits, and because she’s a teenager and doesn’t want that photo on the internet, Lucia chose to draw thick eyebrows vs. the unibrow. She also chose a deep red lipstick.
She did a great job with her DIY Frida Kahlo costume, didn’t sh? Make sure to check out her DIY Thrift Store Kim Possible Costume as well!
