Guys!!! I’m about to blow your mind with this one. How many times do you order take-out Chinese food and have leftovers? For our family, it’s at least twice a month. And as easy as it is to just reheat it and have it for lunch the next day, sometimes we like to switch it up and try to turn it into a completely different dish. That’s how we came up with the Asian-inspired chicken and fried rice waffles idea.
If you love chicken and waffles, you are going to love this easy recipe. With just a handful of ingredients, you can have a savory and sweet dish that your family will go crazy for (just like mine do time and time again).
What size waffle iron do I need?
I personally use a mini dash waffle iron. They are inexpensive, easy to use, and the perfect size for these fried rice waffles. If you have a different waffle iron already at home, you should just adjust the amount of batter needed.
How much fried rice batter should I use?
If you are using the same dash waffle iron we do, I’ve found that one heaping large scoop of fried rice waffles batter is the perfect size to make a single waffle. Again, if you are using a different size or shape waffle iron, you’ll need to adjust the amount of batter you use.
Can I use any other type of rice?
Absolutely! Any rice will work, but you may need to add additional spices to give it more flavor.
If you don’t have any leftover rice at home, you can buy any frozen fried rice as well. Most of them are easy to make and you can just warm them up in the microwave.
What can I top these fried rice waffles with?
The possibilities are endless for topping these fried rice waffles.
One of our favorite options is to use a few small pieces of leftover honey garlic chicken or General Tso’s chicken. Then I drizzle maple syrup or honey on top and then sprinkle scallions on top. It’s quite possibly one of the easiest and most fun dinner ideas. My family absolutely loves it!
Another fun option is to take two fried rice waffles. Top one waffle with whatever you’d like, top with a second waffle and cut it in half for the perfect fried rice waffle sandwich.

Now let’s get to the recipe!
I’ve tried to show the steps in the photos above for you to make it a bit easier to make these easy fried rice waffles.
- Warm your leftover fried rice up and place it in a medium-sized bowl.
- Add the sesame oil, soy sauce, and two large eggs and whisk together until you have a smooth batter.
- Spray your waffle iron with oil to keep the waffles from sticking. Place a large scoop of batter on your waffle iron (this should be adjusted depending on the size of your waffle iron).
- Close the waffle iron and allow the fried rice waffle to cook and brown. Remove and repeat with the remaining batter.

While others have made waffles out of rice before, I’ve had so many people ask for my secret to making them look more like waffles. I’d have to say that the secret is making sure the rice is warm and using a whisk to combine the ingredients. The more you whisk, the less it will look like rice, and the more it will start to look like waffle batter.
