How to Create a Father’s Day Popsicle Stick Coaster

Father’s Day is a little over a week away. In our home we love handmade gifts. If you’ve been following us for a while, you already knew that. We love to create beautiful keepsakes that we can look back on years from now and remember just how small our girls were, once upon a time. This year, since we are saving money to buy a home, I wanted to try to create something that cost $5 or less. It might not seem like a lot for a gift, but sometimes handmade gifts are worth more than anything you could buy in the store. I’m excited to reveal our Father’s Day popsicle stick coaster gift idea.

This adorable keepsake can be made with just three supplies. You should be able to use regular glue, but we chose wood glue to make sure that the sticks stay put. If you use a felt marker, make sure that you write slowly and don’t press too hard. We found that felt tip markers run easily when you press too hard. If your kids will be writing on them, you may want to use a thin marker.

While we didn’t do it on this one, you can also spray the finished popsicle stick coaster with a clear glaze spray, or something similar. This will stop the writing from running if Dad uses his coaster for a cup that sweats at the bottom.

Supplies

You’ll need:
24 Standard Size Popsicle/Craft Sticks
Glue (we use wood glue)
Permanent Marker

Popsicle Stick Coaster Tutorial:

1. Line up 3 popsicle sticks.
2. Add a tiny drop of glue on the left end of each of your popsicle sticks.
3. Place a popsicle stick on top of the three dots of glue. Make sure it is aligned and straight.
4. Add a tiny drop of glue on the right end of each of the bottom layer of popsicle sticks.
5. Place a popsicle stick on top of the three dots of glue. Again, make sure it’s aligned and straight.
6. Add a tiny drop of glue in the center of each of the bottom layer of popsicle sticks.
7. Place a popsicle stick on top of the three dots of glue. Again, make sure it’s aligned and straight. You should now have 2 layers of popsicle sticks.
8. Place a thin line of glue on each of the top 3 popsicle sticks.
9. Place a popsicle stick on top of each of the three lines of glue. Make sure each is aligned and straight.
10. Place a thin line of glue on each of the top 3 popsicle sticks.
11. Place a popsicle stick on top of each of the three lines of glue. Make sure each is aligned and straight.
12. You should now have a triple layer of popsicle sticks on top of the original, bottom three sticks. Put this aside.
13. Using a marker, write “Dear Dad (or whatever your child calls him) on the left side of a new popsicle stick and the current year on the right side.
14. On another popsicle stick, write “I love you because”. You’ll write on eight more popsicle sticks, using each one to share one reason that your child loves his/her Dad. On the last two sticks, you’ll write “Happy Father’s Day” and sign your child’s name.
15. Grab your base sticks and place a thin line of glue on each of the top 3 popsicle sticks.
16. Add your first popsicle stick at the very top of the lines of glue. Make sure they are straight and aligned.
17. Continue to add the rest of your sticks, making sure each is up against the one above it and press down on each to make sure they are secure.
18. When you’ve glued the final stick (with your child’s signature), your popsicle stick coaster is done! Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to make sure it’s fully dry.
