This year has been anything but normal. While we were hoping that this pandemic would be gone by Halloween, it’s not looking like that will happen. That means that our regular Halloween traditions will look a little bit different this year. So instead of moping around the house, we have come up with 15 fun ideas that you can still do this Halloween, while social distancing and keeping your family safe!

15 Social Distancing Halloween Ideas

1: Halloween Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt

Our family loves a good scavenger hunt. So we thought it would be fun to drive (or walk) around our neighborhood and try to find Halloween decorations. I’ve created a fun, free printable Halloween Scavenger Hunt for you to download so you can play along too! 

2: Backyard Treat Hunt

One of the things we have planned for our social distancing Halloween is a backyard treat hunt. If you don’t have a big backyard, you can also extend yours through the neighborhood or hold it inside your house if the weather isn’t great. We will be hiding candy throughout our backyard for our kids to search for. If you’re concerned about dirt or bugs like my girls are, you can also purchase clear acrylic containers like the ones I found on Amazon (or use leftover eggs from your last Easter hunt) and hide a few things in each one. Since they are typically used for ornaments, you can hang them from things like tree branches. This will also help you to keep track of how many there are to find so you don’t leave any behind.

3: Halloween Movie Night

What’s better than a night with the family and your favorite Halloween movies? Grab the popcorn and candy, cozy up on the couch with a blanket big enough to cover your eyes (just in case), and watch a few spooky favorites! We’ll be watching Beetlejuice! 4: Decorate Your Home

Get out your decor and go wild. Just because there may not be any visitors, doesn’t mean you can’t decorate your house for yourself and your family. Decorate the kid’s rooms, the living room, the kitchen. Whatever brings a smile to your face!

5: DIY Costume Contest

Another fun social distancing Halloween idea is to give each member of your family 30 minutes to create a costume from everyday items lying around your house. Maybe a mummy out of toilet paper? How creative can you get?

6: You’ve Been Boo’ed (aka Ghosting)

This is one of our favorite new things to do! Put together a bag or basket full of Halloween goodies and drop them off at a friend’s house. Don’t tell them you’re coming or that you’ve been there. Leave a little note inside letting them know that they’ve been boo’ed and now it’s their turn to do the same for one of their friends! Feel free to download and print our free You’ve Been Boo’ed printable and tape or tie it to the bag!

7: Create Spooky Treats

Why not bake some Halloween-inspired cupcakes or cake pops? Don’t feel like baking? You can also create some easy Halloween-inspired treats from store-bought cookies and candy, like these candy corn cookies or spider OREO treats! Get the kids involved by decorating store-bought brownie bites with frosting and colorful Halloween decorations! 8: Halloween Freeze Dance

When in doubt, DANCE! It’s something our family loves to do on a daily basis. So for a social distancing Halloween, turn on your favorite Halloween songs, dress up in costume and play freeze dance! 9: Halloween Crafts

Get out the construction paper, markers, and googly eyes. It’s time to make some Halloween-themed crafts. Crafts are always a good idea when you have kids in the house and even when you don’t. Crafts are a good break for all ages!

10: Virtual Costume Party

Schedule a zoom or google meet with friends and family and host a virtual costume party. It will be fun to connect with your loved ones and share your creativity!  

11: Guess the Candy

Blindfold each participant. Grab some candy and prepare each one in its own small container or bowl. Using a spoon, feed the candy to each contestant to see if they can guess what kind of candy they are eating.

13: Carve (or Paint) Pumpkins

Our family loves to paint, so we will often paint our pumpkins. But if you are talented enough to carve (because I surely am not), carve your pumpkins with different shapes, faces, or whatever makes you happy. 

14: What’s Inside the Box?

Grab a box and set it on the counter or table. If you’re anything like me, you have a few Amazon boxes laying around. Cut a small hole in one of the sides (big enough for an arm to fit through). Cut the front part of the box out as well (so you can watch what’s happening). Place a random object that has some texture, inside the box. It could be slime, a stuffed animal, a piece of bread… get creative. Imagine what you would think it was if you touched that object blindly and try to find things that would be hard to guess. 

15: Halloween Mad Lib

I’ve always loved Mad Libs because it’s really education disguised as fun. I’ve created a printable Halloween Mad Lib for you and your family to fill out, read and have a good laugh. My family tested it out and couldn’t stop laughing.
