I have a confession. I only go to the fair for the food. Specifically, deep fried Oreos. They are my weakness. There’s something about the fried, warm, ooey-gooey treats that I can’t resist. But we haven’t been to the fair in a while and well, I’m trying to eat healthier. So what’s a girl to do?
Now that I have an air fryer, I figured I would try to recreate those yummy deep fried Oreos from the fair. I went searching for the perfect air fried Oreo recipe and was disappointed with the options. Most suggest that you buy crescent dough from the refrigerated section of your local supermarket. And while they sounded like a good idea, they just didn’t taste the same.
When I told my family that I was going to try to find a new option, they begged me to just stick with the deep fried version. Which gave me an idea… why not make it into a little contest and see which is better… deep fried Oreos or air fried Oreos. Read on to see which ones they preferred!
Deep Fried Oreos
I’m pretty sure we nailed these. They were so close to the deep fried Oreos we buy at the fair, we couldn’t believe it. If you love funnel cakes and Oreos, this is the perfect marriage of flavors. All you need is oil, powdered sugar, Oreos and our recipe for homemade funnel cakes (if you want a shortcut, you can also use the store-bought funnel cake mix)!

Description
Just like the deep fried Oreos you buy at the fair, they are ooey-gooey and so delicious!
Ingredients
- 1 pkg Oreos
- funnel cake batter or 1 pkg funnel cake mix
- vegetable oil
- powdered sugar
Instructions
- Pour approx 1½ inch of oil into a pan and heat on medium-high heat. You want the oil to be higher than the Oreo.
- Mix funnel cake batter according to our directions or packaging (most will just have you add water).
- Once oil is hot, dip an Oreo cookie into the batter and make sure it’s fully covered
- Place batter dipped Oreo into the heated oil. Once you start to see it turn brown (it will be 1-2 minutes), remove and place on a paper towel, on top of a plate. Repeat.
- Top with powdered sugar and serve warm.

Air Fried Oreos
This was definitely not as easy as I thought it would be. I scoured the internet for options aside from the store bought crescent dough. Pancake batter? Too runny. Funnel cake mix? Also too runny. I thought about adding flour to either one of those to try to form a dough that can be rolled, but I didn’t want it to taste too floury.
Then, as I was watching a baking competition on tv last weekend, it hit me… PUFF PASTRY DOUGH! Perfect! But have you ever seen them make it? It takes time. You have to chill it, roll it, fold it, chill it again, let it proof. Who has time for all that? When you want fried Oreos, you want them now, not in 14 hours. But guess what?! The store sells puff pastry dough in the freezer section!
They are super flaky and lack the grease that the deep fried Oreos have.

Description
Love fried Oreos but trying to stay away from deep fried foods? These air fryer Oreos are crispy on the outside and ooey-gooey on the inside!
Ingredients
- 1 pkg Oreos
- 1 pkg puff pastry dough
- powdered sugar
- chocolate syrup
Instructions
- Remove the puff pastry dough from the box and let thaw, according to package.
- You'll find that the dough is folded into three parts. Using a pizza cutter, separate those three parts and then cut each of those into 4 equal squares.
- Using a square of dough, place an Oreo in the center, fold each corner into center of the oreo and pinch any open areas. The Oreo should be fully covered.
- Place 4 dough wrapped Oreos into the air fryer basket. Make sure they aren't touching. Cook on 400° for 8 minutes. Repeat.
- Top with powdered sugar and drizzle chocolate syrup. Serve warm.

So, which do you think was the bigger hit? Believe it or not, it was a tie! And our youngest, she would have been the tie breaker, but she couldn’t choose a favorite because she liked them both so much.

This looks so yummy. Now, I need to buy an air fryer. I love Oreos.
I would vote for air fried oreos! It’s healthier and less oil. Much tastier too!
